Walmart Double Charged Me Twice

Walmart shoppers beware! Two weeks in a row I bought a 30 pack of Busch beer at Walmart, and both times I was charged twice for the beer. The first instance I caught it right away since looking at my cart, I thought the amount I paid was a little higher than I anticipated, and when I looked at my receipt... Sure enough, they rang up two 30 packs of beer. Not the one I bought. On this last visit the amount seemed reasonable at $97 based on what I bought. I only noticed I was again charged twice for my beer when I went to pay the receipt to my Discover card. I use the card just to earn my cash back rewards but pay it right away. The Busch beer just happened to be toward the top of the receipt and so I saw it. Two 30 packs were rung up even though I only bought one. I actually have to go back to Walmart for something today, so my first stop will be the customer service desk. I can't prove I only bought one 30 pack this time, BUT since it happened twice, two weeks in a row, I am thinking there MIGHT be a glitch in their system that is ringing this item up twice. MAYBE they can figure out that this is not an isolated incident and will still refund me my money. But who knows how many other items at Walmart MAY be being double charged? If you are shopping at Walmart CHECK THOSE RECEIPTS.

Usually I do too. At the least at a glance. But sometimes I do miss things. Shame on me for it.

@CarolDM Sucks when it happens. Especially when it's $17. I am hopeful they will give me my money back.

You are welcome. Just watch those receipts. Who knows what other items this "glitch" may be associated with.

Yikes, good luck with getting a refund. They are pretty reasonable there, or at least at the Walmart I shop at. I once left a bag and learned that they actually log these items so that when you call or come in they can verify that you didn't get it.

@porwest That is good to hear. It sounds like they found the error in their system or next time you will find out not. That would be annoying, but at least you are aware of it now and can go straight to customer service or make the clerk take it off your bill right then. I wonder if it would credit you twice?

@kareng Now, if they credited me twice...I'd just take the money and run. Just saying.

I'm sorry you didn't catch it the second time. I hope they will see what happened and refund the second case back to your card.

Maybe it's an easy way for them to earn a little more cash.

One wonders. When I told the girl at customer service what happened she just smiled. It was almost as if she knew. Probably just an interpretation, but who knows? If more people don't check their receipts than do Walmart could take in a considerable amount of money.

@porwest I remember a story from years ago. A saddlery company had sold a saddle to a station property but they couldn't remember who they'd sold it too. So they billed about ten of the biggest stations and four or five paid up without any question!

Oh no. That's a good head's up to have. I do hope that they fix it - and give you a refund, store credit, or something. Actually Family Dollar recently either mis-lead or over charged me. I bought some sale items - that rang up at full price. So either the items were mistakenly put in the sale area, or I was over charged.

@porwest Wow, that's really good of them to do it. But way to have excellent customer service. Alas no, but maybe I should still try it, it's been awhile since I've been to that exact location but still....

@FayeHazel Customer service is an entirely different matter. Walmart sucks at it.

We don't have Walmart here, it's just that sometimes the items we buy don't match with the price.

I have not been to Walmart recently, but that is not a good sign. They could pull the video up to show that you are not lying, plus you have proof since its happened earlier? Hope it all works out!

I am definitely going to be keeping a closer watch. Not just with Walmart. But with everyone. It's SO easy for these companies to dupe you since MOST people simply do not take the time to pay attention. I am not suggesting companies do it on purpose...maybe in some cases they do...but it can be pretty easy these days to get customers to part with their money in more ways than one.

I have been overcharged a lot of time. Things on sale sometimes have a different scanner price. I have been charged for cashback when I did not ask for it and did not get the money. It is the same in a lot of places. In the $$ stores, it is common for someone to give a $20 for payment and only get cashback for a $10.

I always check the receipt immediately after the cashier gives it to me, which is why I get a little nervous while checking. I don't want to hold up the line, and I don't want to have to point out to the cashier that he or she made a mistake. But it's better than getting charged twice. So I do what I have to do.

One of my co-workers bought 8 packs of paper plates for a retirement party we had at the office. When the cashier went to a manual key-in quantity of 8, she accidentally hit 88, and that's how many packs of plates my co-worker was charged. Since she was buying lots of other party supplies, she didn't notice the discrepancy until the end of the month when she went to reconcile all her visa receipts. Since so much time had passed, she had quite a rough time at Walmart get the problem corrected, since she had no way to verify the actual quantity she bought. Finally, she demanded that they pull the video from the day and time of her transaction, and sure enough they still had the video and it was able to show that she only bought 8 packs of plates!

That is interesting that it happened twice and on the same item both times. So weird! Hopefully they can figure out why it happened! I always try to watch when they are ringing things up, and then I go over the receipt after too.
