Britain celebrated Queen Elizabeth's 60th year as a monarch with a Diamond Jubilee in 2012..The last Diamond Jubilee was celebrated for Queen Victoria in 1897..Do you think monarchy is better than democracy?

Monarchy can have some severe drawbacks - tyranny being one. That is why Britain is now a democracy with a nominal monarch. This didn't happen suddenly, of course, and, although we have had a constitutional monarch, controlled by Parliament, since 1688, Britain only really became a democracy with the Representation of the People Acts of 1918 and 1928 that gave the vote to all men and women over the age of 21. In 1969, the voting age was lowered to 18.

@Kuttu_007 It's really a complex network of safeguards to ensure that no single person can become too powerful. The House of Commons is elected by the populace and the leader of the majority party usually becomes Prime Minister. He has to ask the Queen to form a Government but that is really no more than a formality, since the Queen is only the nominal head of Parliament. The Prime Minister is elected by his/her party members and any measures he/she or the Government proposes are normally subject to a vote in Parliament. He/She may be voted out of office or a General Election may be called, which can change the ruling party, and therefore the Prime Minister. Nobody actually has the 'highest authority', therefore.

That's a perfect statement..we call Britain democratic but still they have queen and also prime minister in the highest authority..what does that mean?
