I sat on a wasp!

The warmer weather in the UK this year has brought with it many wasps. Now I know some people think they serve no purpose but they actually help to protect the environment by controlling certain pests and they also pollinate plants like bees. Despite the fact I know they do serve a purpose I was not happy when I sat down in my garden chair and felt a sharp sting on my left cheek! Luckily I'm not allergic so it has gone down well today but it was quite sore yesterday and I had to adjust my sitting position so that I wouldn't be in pain! Have you ever been stung?

I am working on a farm and we have lot of wasps and honey bees on the farm. Few months back after my work I wore my jacket and when I put my hand inside the pocket I was stung by a wasp that was already inside it! There was a lot of swelling and it was painful too! I always get a swelling that lasts for some days and at the end i develop lot of itching at te point where I am stung! Thanks God you are comfortable and nothing happened to you!

Yes I know that some people have a terrible reaction. I think I would be too afraid to work on a farm with many wasps and bees. My granddaughter went on a camp with the Guides (not sure whether you have girl guides in India) and she was stung on the back of her leg twice but by the time she got home 2 days later there was not even a red mark so she healed quickly.

I don't mind wasps, I've never been stung by one though. I've been burned by a bumblebee, it came into my car somehow and ended up under my thigh. I've been bitten by a lot of botflies. They don't pollinate or eat other insects, so they just serve as bird food. I wish the birds were hungrier!

@sprite1950 The nasty buggers are everywhere, but they don't look the same. Horseflies are in the same family I think, but bigger. But they're not often found in cities or towns, as they normally feed of animals.

@Torunn We do get a few horseflies but mainly out in the country pitched on cow pats if I remember from the time I lived in the country side. Thankfully I have never been stung by one.

@Snowdrop66 good thing you're not allergic to it, but must have been really uncomfortable. I encountered one of them last summer while taking the clothes off the clothes lines it was resting on one of the shirts. it flew near my face. I had a fright.

I am quite frightened of them especially when they buzz round my face although they don't normally sting unless you squash them.

@sprite1950 yes they usually just mind their own business and fly somewhere else, but they are scary looking.

@MNRFOLEY I read somewhere you should just make a sugary liquid and put it well away from where you are sitting and then just leave them to get on with it.

Ouch! I'm glad you aren't allergic to them. Both of my D-J-L's are too so they are deathly afraid of one being around them. I'm fortunate like you cause I am not allergic to them but I sure don't want to be stung.

@sprite1950 That is scary. Is your friend close by her mother's place?

@velvet53 No but she is married and has other people who can help. She can also inject herself as long as she can do it before the symptoms start to appear. It's only in the summer months as we don't get wasps in the winter here. It's too cold for them.

My friend was telling me today that she has to inject her mother immediately with an epipen because she is so allergic. If she isn't injected immediately she could die.

Yes. I am allergic to wasp stings so have to be very careful around them. I know this because when I stepped on years ago my foot swelled up like a balloon and was so very painful. What a horrid place you got stung in. I hope you are healing now.

I was stung as a child but don't remember it. To be fair it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, just a bit sore and uncomfortable when I sat down!

Not by wasps. But by regular bees I have. I was strung by one on my toe when I was little and once on the thumb.

I was once stung on my little finger as a child. One pitched on my finger and I tried to brush it off but it stung me.
