Who are you when nobody’s watching?

While eating breakfast with my family in a mountain resort, another family came in. There were some adults, probably siblings with their spouses, along with their kids. What caught my attention was the lone grandparent (maybe) in the group. He was old, balancing himself on a cane, while the adults tended to their plates of bacon and scrambled eggs. Nobody assisted him and it was clear he had difficulty walking the distance to the table. The teenagers didn’t even bother to put their smartphones down for a while to help him. Then a lady went in with a foreigner guy in tow. The mood instantly changed as everyone hovered on the old guy. One guided him to the table, the other got him a plate. Someone fixed him coffee. The lady with the foreigner guy kissed the old man’s cheeks and sat beside him.
Hence the question. Who are you when nobody’s watching?
Photo was not our breakfast.

i fear i couldn't 've jest sat there, but'd gotten'p 'n offered that poor fella some assistance. most disrespectful 'f that family to not tend to his needs first. most refreshin' to see the latter gentleman though. gettin' that tender care'n affection that's most needed.
odd query since they'd done such'n a public place? i'd be the same, don't need'n audience to do what's right.

i wonder if the senior lived separate from them. still, if they're related, they should assist him.

Obviously, the lady with the foreigner is the meal ticket .. The rest of them would have to make sure they don't upset her..
I want some of that fish up there please ...

So funny, they pretended to care for the old man when the "balikbayan" daughter is around!

Right now there's a popular dong going on here which roughly translated means... familiar faces unfamiliar minds...You put your masks on....
So as you say," who are you when no one is watching"..Very pertinent question.
Is that fried koi? Love it. But it's more of a lunch thing here.
Hope you are doing well.

What a disgraceful family. I was always taught to take care of the elders no matter what. What has happened to our society. They are lazy and uncaring. Thank goodness i grew up when respect meant a lot. People need to learn that there is more to life than a stupid cell phone and only thinking of themselves.
Hats off to the people that had the common sense nd caring to help this gentleman out. I hope the family was shamed by all of this.Unfortuneately I doubt that they were. What greedy and unrespectful people they are.

Oh, that is sad and enfuriating. Just because he is not that moneyed as that foreigner (whom we generally know as moneyed because his dollar is 50 + compared to our peso, no one is helping him.
I pity him because obviously his family isn't caring to him .

Not that family!
Kids and elderly get food first when I am around. I always eat last.
