Day 11 Promise 11 Genesis 14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale. 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the Most-High God. 19 And he blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of the Most-High God, possessor of heaven and earth: 20 And blessed be the Most-High God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.” And he gave him tithes of all. Have you been in a place where everything seemed against you? After Lot went to Sodom in the plain of Jordan, war ensued between the several kings of the land. Among those captured in the war was Lot, his family and everything he owned. One of Lot’s men escaped and informed Abram what happened, and he went to war against those who took Lot and his family. With the war over, and Lot returned home, the kings met Abram and presented him with the spoils of war. As they ate, Melchizedek, a priest of the Most-High God, blessed Abram. This is the only mention of Melchizedek in the Old Testament. Yet, the event was note-worthy, as Melchizedek was a representative of God, and blessed Abram. The writer of Hebrews showed Jesus is our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them who are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor unto himself, but he who is called of God, as was Aaron. 5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest; but he who said unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee. 6 As he said also in another place, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Abram recognized Melchizedek’s position and gave him a tithe of the spoils. This was before God told Israel they were to give Him a tithe of everything so He could bless them. Hebrews 7:4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5 And verily they who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: 6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. 8 And here men who die receive tithes; but there he received them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. 9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who received tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchizedek met him. When you give a tithe of what you have, you open a way for God to bless you as Melchizedek blessed Abram. Satan doesn’t want God to bless you. When it comes to giving any portion of your income back to God, he condemns you of throwing away your money. When you withhold your tithe, God withholds your blessing. Let’s pray: Father, let Your blessing fall on me as I give back to You a tithe of what You give me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
