Maybe those of you who have a YMCA, LA Fitness, or Lifetime Fitness gym membership can weigh in. For those that don’t, where do you go to the gym? And what is your criteria for picking a gym?
I have had a Planet Fitness membership for many years. Planet Fitness is a bare-bones $10 or $20/month membership and what you get with that is standard gym equiptmenr, weights and cardio machines. Showers. And if you have the more expensive account you can tan and use their massage chairs and beds. Which are nice.... also most facilities are 24 hours. Which helps folks like me who operate on different schedules.
What I have been pining for in a gym is the extra amenities....A POOL! hot tub. And sauna. Specifically. Swimming is such a good workout and I could use that.
I don’t want to ditch the Planet Fitness account, I like to tan there occasionally and like that they are 24 hours and only 8 blocks from my house.
I like what YMCA stands for although no locations are SUPER close to me. It would be approx $70 a month. LA FITNESS. Looks like it would be between $40-60 a month with a start up and annual fee. And Lifetime is terrible overpriced, being the “high end” gym. I also want a membership with occasional guest passes so I could bring my friends or family.
Any thoughts?

I didn't know the YM was so pricey. My membership at the YW is reasonable at $35 a month. True, it's the senior price, but the regular isn't much more. I think $45.
If you can find a gym that does it all with a reasonable price so you can get a swim workout in too, it might not be a bad idea to ditch Planet Fitness.

I do like the option to tan at Pf, which I know is not good for you, but winter is sooo long here that it just feels nice to keep a little bit of color and get warm. That’s my real drawback to cancelling it. I always read about you swimming, so thanks for planting this bug in my brain!! Lol

@maezee Yes, winter is long in these northern climes. At $10 a month, it's a good option to keep it. Though you would be looking at $80 in gym memberships. That seems like a lot of money to me. It would be a matter of how often do you use those tanning beds and is it really worth it to keep it and have two.

My husband went to planet fitness for a bit since it was close to our house at the time. He liked it there. =)

I think the Y is the best bet. There is one maybe 45 minutes or less from here that I hear has all the amenities including a steam room and it is a relativey low cost..the thing is, I could only go when I am in the area..not driving that far on a routine basis.

I know! Mine are much closer, but still between 10-20 miles away, which feels far when you live in an urban area. I like their mission statement and that they are non-profit. But I believe they only give you 4 guests passes per year. On the other hand, their facilities look great!

Do you have any “swim clubs” or pools in town, where you could get an annual membership for what one month at the Y costs? I’ll tell you, I’ve always had problems with the Y being so freaking expensive while listed as a “non-profit” organization.

As long as you get the use from the membership and you enjoy the atmosphere whatever gym you select will be worth the cost. Unfortunately, some buy the membership and quit using the gym after awhile a big waste of money. But sounds like your not that type of person so it's money well spent to remain healthy.
I prefer working out in the comfort of my home. I never enjoyed the gym experience.
