Uncomfortable at the register

There was a gentleman cashier at the first store I stopped at today. He was trying to make a joke about Bobby Flay because of the meat the lady in front of me had bought. At first I thought that perhaps English wasn't her first language, but I realized that she understood him, she just didn't get the joke. He looked towards me and I just gave him an indulgent smile. He tried again with something else, and she still didn't seem to crack a smile. I guess she wasn't feeling overly talkative today. When he finished ringing up my purchases I said "oh and here's a coupon" (it was on the item itself, and I had a digital coupon loaded for it to so I practically got it for free). He looks at me and says "Oh,only on Saturdays and Sundays." I said "Oh, you only accept coupons on the weekends? Let's see what the machine does." I knew he was kidding around, he gives me a sheepish look as he scans the coupon and says "ah there we go, it worked!" I was happy to see such a happy man. His humor might be a little different than everyone else's, but it didn't break him from his stride. It made my afternoon, to be honest with you. When you go shopping, is there a cashier that you like to always go to?

I've never had a cashier actually notice my existence. Of course, MrsJ tends to keep me fairly well hidden when shopping. I think I embarrass her.

I prefer to shop alone for the most part.I get into a mode where I'm making sure I've got everything on the list. Cashiers tend to be focused on the things they are scanning for the most part anyway. After awhile that type of job gets robotic.

Sometimes when we do our grocery shopping we look for a few of the cashiers we like

There never seem to be a regular at this grocery store. I sometimes go to two different ones in one trip. There is one that I am almost always going to the self check out for, but the other doesn't have self checks and the cashiers are almost always different.

Humor is important but sometimes it's not funny but sarcastic. I've been the victim of those and usually just blink at them and then say boooo. I smile at the attempt if it's not a joke that can harm someone. There are days I have to stop at the store or other places and don't want to engage. I need space from too much noise. I'm not rude but try to get out quickly. I don't like self check machines.

I completely understand the need for space and not too much noise, trust me. I like to use the cashiers at one store, but prefer the self checkout at another. Of course, if I have more than say ten items, then I go through the line, unless of course it's way too busy.

@noni1959 I like to listen to calming music.Silence is great, but sometimes when I can't have complete silence, I try to block out the rest of the noise with soothing sounds.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Today was a day I didn't want extra talk. I've been desperate for quite yet had to go run errands. I stopped at a small cafe I usually see people I know and I took my food outside to a table to be alone and just breathe.

Oh I do that getting nervous and smile thing too. I did that today, but that was with a produce guy. I just smiled and said hello, how are you? and went about my day. I'm not very good at socializing at the best of times... I'm the sort of introvert that has the override button where I can be the life of the party if it's necessary... It just drains me usually. I surround myself with friends who can be the life of the party and let me go hide and pet their animals. (true story, I legitimately went inside a friend's house at a bonfire party and hid away with her dogs. Her dad comes in and says "being antisocial again, huh?" yep, that's me.

@Ladanger Oh I've giggled before too. I have a small group of people that I feel I can be free around. There's one person, my best friend, that I would probably go pretty much anywhere with because she knows how to read me. She knows when I need to step away and understands it. We've always joked that she's the extrovert that adopted the introvert.

@ScribbledAdNauseum i am an introvert also and i socialize with certain people only. I have to have energy to be around others. I know the feeling. I get that nervous and start smiling. Sometimes i even giggle.

That's awesome. I know how it is to sort of form a bond with a cashier. She knows how you like your stuff bagged, she knows how you do your coupons (if you do). I used to be a cashier, and trust me, cashiers have favorite customers too.

@rakski Oh okay. How many hours does a person in a job like that work, do you know? Here it can depend, but usually 8 hour shifts.

Not everyday you can see that kind of cashier. Not every store will have that kind of good funny employee.

I agree. Cashiering is a stressful job, and people don't realize how stressful it can be. I was glad to see this gentleman in a good mood.
