House/Contractor Update

Received a second bid today (yes, on a Sunday!) for the roof. This one wants to do the whole roof and is $3,000 higher. Yesterday I got a CALL BACK (yes!) from the guy that I chose to do the ceilings and wall. He says we need to call a specialist to come in and take down what is wet and possibly moldy. They have a moisture meter to detect what parts need to come down. This will be an extra contractor and an extra charge. :-( Still nothing from our regular roofer. We are making the decision next week; and I left a message for him saying that if I don't hear from him, we are choosing another contractor. We are going to run an ad for the piano and the large oak desk so that they don't have to go into the dumpster. I have prices for a 20 yard dumpster. Had a bit of sticker shock since we haven't rented one in several years. No other call-backs. We are trying to hurry this along as best we can. The realtor is having his brush hog guy come by the house to give us an estimate on doing the yard (it's WAY overgrown). I have one other estimate at this time. All for now! Photo credit: Pixabay

As far as the wet sheet rock all one needs to do it wear a face mask and gloves, have plenty of air, like open doors and windows and that is what everyone does anyways when working in a house. So you will pay extra for gloves and face masks.

@LindaOHio Yes, sounds that way. SO, what I would do is find a demo guy and get his price, then low ball the other one when he hits you with a huge bill! If you want to use him.

The drywall guy doesn't want to do it himself and recommended someone he knows. Maybe they work together to get more business for the other guy.

You are having quite a time of it. The place that I probably will sell in a few years has a nasty front yard- I just mowed the weeds down BUT it does not have picture perfect grass. We are trying to sell the place to someone we know so that we do not have to go through a realtor- IF only she has a way to pay for this place. Roofing is so expensive! I wish you luck and far less stress.

@LindaOHio That's plenty to do. We currently are dealing with two different houses and that's more than I care to mess with at times.

Since it was my husband's fault, I'm letting him carry most of the stress. I'm just handling getting contractors and bids...and a little stress. :-D

Good luck with hurrying it along. We just dropped $520 on getting some repairs done on the roof. We want the whole thing done after we can get rid of the trees. That's going to cost about $7000 to do.

That's about what the bid was for doing the whole roof. The first roofer said that part of the roof was still in good shape.

@LindaOHio Our roofer said pretty much all needed to be replaced. They did a pretty good job on the little repair we had them do. First we have to figure out who we are going to get out here to do the trees for us.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Taking trees down is expensive. You might want to get a couple of bids. We ended up paying about $1,000 per tree which I think is way too much.

Yes, you will need a specialist to come in to remove the walls and mold. Sorry.
