People who know me know that I like to have books and I used to spend a lot on them, before the electronic versions they have entered te market. In fact I have had a small personal library of my own which got had thousands of volumes of books on various subjects. I had to burn most of these books as they were infested with the termites some years back! Luckily some rare and expensive books got saved from the termites. I have purchased a set of World Book Encyclopaedia which is having 22 volumes in 1992 for Rs.18000/- (about $580 then) . I was given two big volumes of Dictionary at that time as free gift. I was proud owner of these volumes till the year 2000, when the CDs of many such encyclopaedia entered the market at the rate of dime a dozen! Did you spend a lot on Books ? What is the maximum amount you spent so far on a single or set of books?

I still prefer paper books. Earlier I spent a fortune on them but now I am limited with my reading time and so buy less books. The costliest I have bought in recent times is a book by Steiner which was around Rs5200. Now I have my elder one who is a voracious reader and spends her entire pocket money on that. She spends an average of Rs. 500 per month. We have lots of books neatly in few bookshelves. We also keep donating it to government schools and their library from time to time. My daughters run a book club with children of their age group.

Though I had less time I used to purchase the books to keep them as reference books in my library. Your daughter looks like me who used to spend lot of pocket money on the books! Having our own library gives a altogether different feeling and I enjoy the feeling! I sincerely appreciate your daughter's idea of running a book club! I used to run a private library during summer vacations to increase the number of volumes in my library!

@arunima25 , Yes, kids they pick up the habits from their parents and in fact many a times they take their parents as their idols. That is why I purchased this set when my kid was in Kg I or Kg II and he used to refer these books once he learnt how to read! My wife too developed te habit of referring these volumes!

@AKRao24 I too have books that I don't read completely but keep for reference. I love my book collection. I value my books more than gold.I think my daughters picked up this love for book as they were exposed to books and library from young age. Even their school promotes a lot of reading.

Yes, I spend a lot on books, because I love to read and my husband also loves to read a lot. We spend a lot for one ancient books about medical herbs that we found years ago in Italy. If I remember well we spend about 600$ for that book.

@AKRao24 It is an ancient edition and only very few of those book exist. For the moment I do not plan to sell it, but we will make a lot more than what we paid should we decide to sell it at an Auction.

I do have books. Mostly fiction works. Some are technical works on Software Programming and allied subjects, and some miscellaneous. Yet I do not have the books for as much amount as you have. You have a grand collection, or may I say a Super one!!

I had an excellent collection, which was destroyed by the termites and I ha to burn a lot of volumes to get rid of these pests! I already mentioned about this in one of my discussions... Link:
Six months back unfortunately it was observed that termites have badly infested our show cases. Most of the books were practically converted into muddy...

We bought a set of encyclopaedias for the boys many years ago but eventually took them to an op shop (thrift store). That was probably the most we ever spent on books.

@JudyEv , That is true...there is lot of information about a subject on the net which may not be same ...we need to use our discretion while using the information!

@AKRao24 I think encyclopedias in particular are pretty valueless nowadays. There is so much information on the web and it is much more up to date. However, you do have to be selective and careful in what you believe.

I didn't know termites like books... I prefer hardcovers to paperbacks so it costs me more. But I try to get them when they are on sale so I save money. Not sure on the highest amount I've ever spent on a book. The anthology I was once published in cost me close to $50 I think, so that would probably be it.

Termites love old literature more In fact they are experts in damaging old books....iit is the fungus grown on these books that attracts them and they eat fungus along with the paper. I also like to have hard cover books but they are also not spared by our literary friends the 'Termites'! $50 is not a small amount gto be spent on the book....nice to know!

@AKRao24 It was hardcover and inside there was a color decoration on the pages. Maybe that's one of the reasons it was that pricey.

@AKRao24 I thought termites eat wood. Didn't know they are attract to fungus. We eat fungus too but that's mushrooms. And come to think of it we eat moldy cheese. Is that fungus too?

Yes, before the advent of the internet the books were only the source of knowledge and people used to purchase them on many occasions and even they use to present them on many occasions to friends and relatives!

Right now I spend zero on books because I use Overdrive through my local library. But I sometimes spend at least 20 dollars on ebooks if I find one I can't get on Overdrive.

I gave my books away, sold some and kept few. I was hoarding books and I am back to minimal. So, I go to the local library and get any book I wanna read, free.

I can understand that! Maintaining the books is not an easy job! They require reular dusting and anti termite and anti fungal treatment! If we have rodents then we have the different problem! I apprexiate the idea of getting books from local library and returning them after the reading!
