Come and get warm

The last horse endurance ride we attended was held on a farm. The owners don’t have a house there yet but there is a big caravan that they live in when they go there. What you see in the photo is their fire-pit. Isn’t it a beauty? It is made from the base of one of the those big cement mixers that you see on the backs of trucks. It holds a lot of wood and creates enough heat for a big crowd of people. You can see a hollow piece of wood in the centre which forms a sort of chimney, at least until it all burns up. This helps direct some of the smoke higher and hopefully away from people’s eyes. On the left is an iron rod that holds a kettle which can be swung over the fire to boil water. Just behind the fire-pit is a large log which serves as seating. There are three of these around the fire. Behind the log is a big stack of wood waiting to be burnt. As you can imagine, this was a popular place for riders to gather in the cold evenings.

That is really neat. What a useful way to use something that could no longer be used for its original purpose.

It makes a great fireplace for a crowd but does go through a lot of wood.

It threw out a lot of heat. Someone would arrive and get close to it but they wouldn't stay there long.

It looks very well thought out and organized. I could just imagine a large group being able to safely sit around the fire and warm themselves.

This fire pit is beautiful, I can imagine that you can feel very warm staying near the fire, better than a fireplace.

@JudyEv It gets very hot staying too close to such a big fire, it's great when it's very cold outside.

When you first went to the fire, you got as close as you could but very soon you were back away from it a little.

I can imagine many wonderful nights around that campfire! Which now has me longing for colder weather so I can go camping!

@JudyEv I wish I could sit around a campfire every night. That would be fun, and relaxing.

No, there are no restaurants nearby. Some locals set up a kitchen and supplied meals for the weekend.

@Janet357 You would need a very long poker with a big piece of steak on the end!

It's mostly idle chatter and lots of laughing. Occasionally someone will turn up with a guitar.

@JudyEv I like the idea that the smoke blows up a chimney and not in people's faces.

The men have to find a hollow log to become the chimney.
