It has never looked better, but I still hate it!

The hydrangea bush at the front of our house is looking particularly good this year. However, I have never liked it and probably never will! Why? It all has to do with ancient memories from more than 60 years ago. When I was very young, before going to school, my mother used to leave me with the people across the road from where we lived at the time - a kindness on their part, I'm sure - when she had to go out for the afternoon. Those afternoons were SO boring! Mr and Mrs Marsh must have been in their 80s - we later discovered that Mr Marsh had been a soldier during the Boer War of 1899-1902! As a result they had very little idea as to how to entertain a boy of three or four and I spent much of the time sitting in a chair doing absolutely nothing. So where do hydrangeas come into the picture? The Marshes had one growing just outside their front door, and I came to associate hydrangeas with being bored rigid! Needless to say, we did not plant our hydrangea - it has been there for at least the 30 years that we have lived in this house. My wife likes it, so it has to stay!

I might do too, were it not for the association!

My mother loved her hydrangeas. I was intrigued how they' droop so badly on a hot day but give them a drink and they'd perk up again.

Oh the nice elderly people that cared for you. But I understand John, I happen to like those plants and flowers. I remember my son went to a small private pre school in Abingdon that was run by ancient Oxford professors lol

@indexer Those childhood connections do tend to loom large.
