Compliment or Insult?

United States
August 28, 2019 9:26am CST
There are many times in my daily life when I am left wondering if what someone just said was a compliment or an insult or criticism. (I am fairly good at recognizing sarcasm. Here was one from yesterday. A co-worker said that I was very good at conversation threading. First of all I am not quite sure what conversation threading is, and it made me feel like perhaps I simply talk too much. Do you think this was a compliment or insult?

@Ghosthere2 Did you ask her what she meant by being a good conversation threader?

Hm ... I don't know. It is sometimes difficult to evaluate.

I would have thanked them and asked what they meant as I have no idea what that means?

It was a very public setting and I was feeling quite uncomfortable. I just kind of "wilted" into the background.

I think it was a compliment. I think that the person wanted to say that you are good at talking to people or good at continuing the conversations.

@Ghosthere2 Someone wrote about this topic on Reddit. The person gave advice and examples, and tried to teach people how to become good at conversation threading. Before I read that I didn't even know what the word meant.

Oh, I do hope you are correct! Although I am not certain that would be accurate.

When some says something and I’m not sure I ask a why question back to get further info if it’s a compliment or to see them freak out fo they freak out and take a while to answer it’s typically and insult. So I would have said why do you think I’m good at conversational threads?

@Ghosthere2 your welcome! You could probably even ask it today if you saw that person. Hey, you remember yesterday you said this I wanted to know why you thought that?

It's not a simple explanation: I don't think it was meant as an insult at all.

@Ghosthere2 That's not a common term that comes up in conversation. I would say they knew what it meant.

That does seem very complicated. I wonder if they even knew what it meant.

That's a new one to me too - I would certainly have wanted to ask a bit further!

It was a very public setting and I didn't really feel comfortable asking. I probably should have.

maybe it was a compliment. when you are bubbly, that will definitely start a conversation-a quality perhaps she does not have.
