Day 28
Promise 30
Genesis 35:9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
What kind of changes have you seen in your life? Have the changes always been good?
God appeared to Jacob at Bethel when he fled from Esau and went to Padanaram. When he left Padanaram, God told him to return to Bethel, and He met with Jacob a second time. In Bethel, Jacob built an altar and God met with him, blessed him, and told him he would be fruitful and nations would come from his seed along with kings.
At this point, Jacob had eleven sons and one daughter. God’s promise to him was the same as it was to Abraham and Isaac. As God spoke to Abraham face to face, he also spoke to Jacob in the same manner. It was at Bethel, God officially changed Jacob’s name to Israel.
For the believer, a day is coming when everyone will have a new name, known only to him.
Jesus told John to write letters to the seven churches. In one of those letters, Jesus promised every believer a new name written in a white stone.
Revelation 2:17 He who hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches; To him who overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows saving he who receives it.
No one knows their new name, but you know you will receive a new name fit for you alone.
God gave Jacob a new name which meant prince of God. With the new name came new responsibilities. Nations and kings would come from his seed and his seed would possess the land of Canaan.
You have responsibilities as a child of God to spread the gospel to the world. You might not go physically to foreign countries, but you can go to your neighbors, and you can spread the Word through the Internet so the whole world hears the good news of Jesus Christ.
Let’s pray: Father, You gave me responsibilities as Your child. Help me fulfill them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
