Getting the van fixed

My parents dropped off my van on Saturday and they called Sunday saying my vans spark plugs 3 and 5 where our and would be best to replace them all even though I had number 4 already replaced. The shaft sensory was broken and need replaced which was $150 so we said okay do that and if the spark plug still don’t work then replaced them. So they did the sensory called back saying all of my spark plugs were very old times 2. The 4 plug was fine since it go changed last October. We asked them to tell us how much it would be for the piece and labor. My has been dealing with them since they have given us a hard time in the past for our other car.
My mom told them go ahead and give it because it would be $810 when all done. Then my mom got another car 10 minutes before it being down saying to failed it’s safety because my muffler has a whole in it and my two back lights are out. So my mom told them no don’t tough them. Enough is a enough we can do the rest of the work another week. We also wanted to make sure they are not lying because it was a different guy calling.
I swear some people think they can take me and my mom like a fool and thinner are going to cough out money so I can have my car safer to drive right this second. Not happening or else we would be broke. We can do our own lights just fine the muffler we can get done another week because it’s going to coast under $200 and we can do that in 2 weeks when my husband gets paid and then have the safety done.

How often do you have to go through inspection? Or, when is the next time you will be required to have an inspection? If it's a while, it will give you time to work on the other stuff later.

Safety is down yearly and you can’t drive the car when it fails a safety in the state of Virginia. Your car must past is at the time of emissions is done if not you have to go back and do it again once your fixed the problems. They changed it from 30 days to 10 days grace period. I can have my van and have it sit in front of the house but I can’t be out driving it persay or I can get the tickets. We did get the lights from the auto store and we will fix that ourselves which saves us like $24 because for 2 $7 lights they wanted $24 for two parts and labor not happenings the muffler we are looking into. The person at the auto shop told us to take the failed sticker off and take it to another shop have them do the emission test if it passes we can call the one that just did it and tell them they lied again.
My husband said for them do the muffler with there own part it would $500 total with labor. Labor itself-for the muffler is $300.

@moffittjc they wanted another $500 for the whole thing plus the $810 for all 6 sparks plugs and the emission test. So my mom told them no just fail it and we would have someone check the other lights and the muffler.
Husband home work is to see if he can change it himself at home the part itself is $70-$80 if its real easy doesn’t take took taking off a bunch of things like our spark plugs do then he’ll do it. If not will save money on the side the next few paychecks and then get it changed because if we bring in our own part till coast us $300 maybe a little less depending how long it takes them.

@ShyBear88 I've never changed a muffler on a vehicle before, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't take $300 worth of labor to do it. Honestly, you only have to connect the muffler to the exhaust pipe, so how hard can that be? I can't believe the high prices some places charge to fix things.

It won't pass inspection with the muffler or lights like that so hopefully you won't need to drive it anytime soon. Mufflers seem to go back to fast on some cars.

Our muffler has never been changed ged on any of our cars. So this would be the first one. The 2 little lights we are doing on our own. I can drive it as is for a few days but we are going to have someone else look at it for the muffler. I don’t want to pay $500 if it isn’t need to be changed.
