That Shingles Shot

Just finished my second one and my arm is killing me. But, it is certainly better than getting the disease... I never really heard much about it until a university friend contracted it. Any one listening to him describe the pain would send you running for the shot. Not that I have a doctor since returning home. It's been a year and still nothing. But we do have two really good doctors at our local walk in clinic. He asked me a couple of months or so if I was interested and I instantly remembered F's story. I think that I went to Costco the very next day and had the first of two injections. Today was my last. It's not a guarantee that you won't get Shingles, but if you do, it will be a much milder version of it. What do you know about Shingles?? Now, I just have to keep pushing hubby to get it too!!
Dr. Marjorie Dixon gives us an in-depth description of shingles. Find out if you're at risk, its relationship to chicken pox and what causes it.

I've had shingles a few times, it is terribly painful. My worst bout was my first which occurred during a heatwave and it was located on my face and went into my hair.

@marlina One time that I had it I literally lost about 3 or 4 days as I slept since the pain pills don't let you do anything else.

@Juliaacv , You are right, not much to do when so much in pain, better sleeping it off.

@Hate2Iron Working in the medical field for many years I was very aware of it, glad you got your vaccine.

My husband has had shingles already and thank God I did not get it when he had it! He was in a LOT of pain with it and missed quite a bit of work when he had it. =(

@Hate2Iron He was around 35 or so, but he has a very low immune system. He was born a premature baby and with under developed lungs. He's had many health problems in his life already, including seizures when younger, heat stroke, mild heart attack, etc...

I had shingles three years ago, it was painful, but surely not as painful as kidney stones, not even to compare.

I'm wishing you luck too. There is a new vaccine available. I wonder if that one would be permissible??

I know a lot about having shingles as I got it a few years ago and it went to my eye. Extremely painful, took a lot of painkillers. Lasted one month.

@Hate2Iron , the doc told me that I was lucky that I saw him inside 72 hours as I could have lost my eyesight. Very scary!

I don't know much about it. An Uncle had it a couple of years ago. He said it was not pleasant.

My last injection seems to have been worse than the first... but it could have been my imagination??

We've had shingles shots but I think we only had to have one. My Mum had shingles and a friend was in hospital for a week with it. It's very nasty and once you get it, it can recur.

There is an updated version that I had... I wonder if that is the reason for the 2 shots?? I hope your mom never gets it again!!

I've been dealing with shingles for the past week. Luckily I caught it very early and got on antiviral medication right away so it hasn't been bad at all.

@Hate2Iron Good idea to get the injections even if there is no guarantee that you can get it or not. I hope your husband will consider getting the injections.
