Smart Move, or Bad Timing?

As I do every year, I got my flu shot this morning at work. However, because getting jabbed in the arm with one needle isn't torture enough, I also got my pneumonia shot this morning as well (one shot in each arm). I was proud of myself for taking proactive steps to maintaining my good health... ...until this afternoon when I realized both of my arms hurt really bad from the shots (sore muscles). Then I realized my smart move may not have been done at the best possible time. You see, I have a paintball tournament this coming weekend, and I can't be out there on the field with sore muscles that can barely lift my paintball gun! I'm already handicapped with healing broken ribs, I don't need something else slowing me down as well. But it's only Tuesday, so maybe there's hope for me! We play our first games Friday. What do you think? Should the soreness in both of my arms be gone by Friday? I wonder what WebMD would have to say about it? Oh, never mind! If I look it up on WebMD, the information will tell me I'm dying and need to seek medical attention right away! I'll just take my chances that I'll be fine by Friday. I don't really have a choice, do I? I have an itch on my head. Can someone come scratch it for me? I can't lift my arms that high right now!

My left arm still hurts, but my right arm is already feeling better. Since I'm right-handed, I'm not too worried since it looks like the right arm is feeling better faster than my left arm.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Isn't it a little too early to start thinking about flu season? I don't know, maybe they wanted to get an early jump on getting the shots out to people.

Are those shots so painful? I have no experience I never had one. In my opinion the pain should not last more than 24 hours.

@LadyDuck I'm sure you will continue to be fine without the shots. If I had to pay for them, I probably wouldn't bother to get them, but since they were free, I figured it wouldn't hurt to get them. Just a precautionary measure.

The shots weren’t painful, but they stick the needles into your muscles, so it just causes muscle soreness.

WebMD is good for letting you know you're dying with every question you ask it. I'm quite certain you were fine by last Friday and played a good paintball tournament.

Haha, yes I agree in your assessment of WebMD. No matter what you look up on that site, it tells you that you are dying and need to go to the emergency room immediately! And yes, I was fine by the tournament and had no issues whatsoever during the weekend.

@just4him Yes, I'll be able to play. I go back to see the surgeon on Thursday. We don't have practice again until Saturday and Sunday. I should be good to go by then.

@moffittjc I already got my pneumonia shot awhile ago. It is a one time thing for us here. Our flu vaccines will not begin till November this year. I will be getting mine. Healing broken ribs is very bad and to top it with sore muscles good luck with that. I would say how fast do you heal? I am a very slow healer so I cannot make a guess here. Just rest as much as you can.

@Hannihar The pneumonia shot is good for 5 years. I asked what happens if you forget when you last got your pneumonia shot, and they said you can actually get one every year, as it doesn't hurt anything to get it more frequently than every 5 years.

@moffittjc I cannot remember what they said ours is good for. So is yours also a one time thing and you do not get anymore pneumonia shots? I am glad you are a fast healer.

The big question now is....will I get a reaction from the shots? Some people always seem to get the flu after they get their flu shots. That's never happened to me, but it is always something I think about in the back of my mind. And getting a flu shot and pneumonia shot in the same day, I wonder if it's going to overwhelm my immune system?

@moffittjc true! It hasn't happened to me either but some say they do. I guess you should see how you feel thay day when you wake up.

Since I'm so late in getting to this discussion, how did it affect your play in tournament? Were you still sore? I would have only gotten one at a time just in case there was a reaction. Then you would know which one caused it. I only got the flu shot so far this year, but on my next visit to the doctor's office I will ask if my pneumonia shot is still good. I believe they are good for five years.
