Peppermint

Everything has gotten all overgrown around here this summer. I wanted to move my peppermint to a container so it would quit taking over my other plants, so I cut it back. I dried the mint that I cut back and now I am processing it to make peppermint tea to drink. It is so fragrant! I also have "sweet mint" and spearmint so I will be well stocked. I will likely make some mint tea blends to enjoy. Probably will also make apple-mint jelly. The house smells so good from the peppermint. I know it is not everyone's favorite, but I enjoy it a lot.

I have peppermint growing out front, I'm hoping it'll choke out the weeds plus mice don't like it so if I can get it to grow around the border of my home it might repel mice. Of course making homemade tea from the leaves is a bonus.

It is supposed to repel mice and I used to put it in my kitchen drawers at the other house. Here I think the snakes and hawks eat the mice. Supposed to be effective on spiders and ants as well, I believe.

I've heard about it being effective on ants but I don't know about spiders @GardenGerty If not for Ally I'd wish there were snakes here. As for hawks, they no longer grace our skies that much anymore, too much construction around here has ruined their hunting grounds

I will enjoy using it with either other herbs or regular loose leaf tea. Maybe in some cooking as well.

I have to go out and cut all those plants of mints, they are taking over a too vast area.

That is why I am moving them all to containers to grow, although I would like some growing along my foundation.

This is the first time I have ever harvested it for winter use. We had it everywhere when I was a kid. It was growing under the a/c and condensation kept it watered and brought the fragrance in.

I never heard it was bad for animals, but I never had animals that ate it, either, so no worries. I have some "cat mint" I bought from a local green house. I know it is related to cat nip, but not as strong. Does not seem to attract strays.

I love those soft peppermints, I can sit down and eat a bag. I have spearmint, I need peppermint. I picked a bunch of mint to process for jelly, its still in a vase of water on the kitchen counter.

Yes, it is good for the stomach and digestion. It also helps the breathing. It can be added to salves for muscle rubs. Is that how it is used where you are?

I have a few grasshoppers, but my mint survived. My spearmint is in another container in back, so I should knock on wood, cause the hoppers may have gotten it. I am trying to encourage mint to grow around my foundations to repel spiders and ants.

My first year the mint did not survive, so I bought more. It did well in a small garden plot, but now I want it more contained. There are places where I would like it to go wild, but not the flower bed where I had it.
