1793 - The first cornerstone of the Capitol Building is laid by George Washington.
1927 - The Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) goes on the air.
1997 - Ted Turner donates $1 billion to the United Nations.
1940 - Frankie Avalon was born. He is an American singer, actor and was a teen idol. His most famous song was Venus (see below). Some other songs: Why, Just Ask Your Heart, I'll Wait for You, Bobby Sox to Stockings and A Boy Without a Girl. Avalon appeared in a lot of movies, including some beach party movies.
1961 - James Gandolfini was born. He was an American actor and producer. His most famous role was Tony Soprano in the HBO series the Sopranos for which he won 3 Emmys, 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards and 1 Golden Globe. His performance was regarded as among the greatest performances in television history. Some of his movies: Get Shorty, The Taking of Pelham 123, True Romance, The Last Castle and Enough Said. He died in 2013.
