Sugar scrubs

United States

I was watching a youtube channel that I watch somewhat often. I came across this lady several years ago and bought a soap or two from her at one point. Her specialty is soap and the majority of her videos are about cold process soap. However, she does have a few other videos that are about other variants of soap. Like sugar scrubs. She made a sugar scrub that I thought was really kind of cute. I've bought a sugar scrub or two that included soap (and not just sugar and oil) but I didn't know how it was made. Now I do. I've also found a whipped soap base for whipped soaps that I could use for something else. I'm feeling rather crafty again and am considering purchasing a few of the bases to make my own / as gifts. Are you the DIY type gifter or do you buy from stores and that's that?

I buy gifts for others but I love getting gifts that are handcrafted.

I will sometimes buy gifts that are handcrafted. I love when people say "Oh I loved that! What store did you get it from?" and I can say "oh a handmade store on etsy" etc. Of course this year I am seriously thinking about handcrafting the stuff myself.

@Happy2BeMe I already have some ingredients and the containers can be bought at the dollar tree. I've got my mind on the most economical way. Honestly though, I am more excited for myself. I didn't know there was a whipped soap base that a person could buy. All I'd need to do is add the fragrance oil I want and whip it, put it in a container and voila. I'm sure it would come out to being much cheaper than me buying it all the time.

Yes, I watch a lot of crafting videos, but I am not interested in soaps.

I don't know that I will ever make a bar of soap but I do like to watch other people make them. I stick to beauty crafts mostly, minus anything to do with makeup as I don't wear it. What kind of crafting videos do you watch?

@LadyDuck I see those cake decorating or cookie decorating videos every once in awhile. Two of my cousins are wonderful at decorating cakes but I am not. One of my cousins makes the cake for her children every year based on the theme that they want. She is also very good at drawing which I think helps a lot.

When my face gets all clogged up I just make a paste of sugar and water and rub it on my face

I've never heard of that. I was told once by an old co-worker to use dove soap as a mask. It worked well to unclog my pores, but it doesn't work for everyone.

@ScribbledAdNauseum hmm I was my face with dove but never tried using it as a mask

@shaggin Yep, it has to be the dove original bar soap. You dampen your face slightly and then rub the bar on the areas that are broken out or are prone to break outs. You have to sleep with it on overnight and wash it in the morning

@ScribbledAdNauseum I will have to do that I love YouTube. Right you definitely don’t want to do them with your best friends if they are going to be gifts.

@Tina30219 I think doing sugar scrubs as a project with friends would be the cheapest though. I've been watching the youtube videos and there appears to be so many different ways to do them. I am going to also look up written recipes and come up with my own.

You should look for videos on youtube. They really aren't too hard to make. Then look for Nature's Garden website and you'll find most, if not all, the supplies you'd need. However, I completely understand wanting to do these with a friend. I was considering bringing it up with my best friends but since I also want to make these as gifts...

I use to make cards from a greeting card program we had. I guess you are referring to something a little different?

@JESSY3236 Oh. Did you use the word art and clipart? I have a cousin who was very talented with the paint program on windows. I mean the 98 version or XP version of windows and not the newest paint programs. She used to do flowers very prettily or a sunset scene.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yes and no. I also had a greeting card program too. But after that got lost, I used to Word to make cards.

I guess it's ingrained in me. My mom used to make gifts for people each christmas. Little soaps, little chocolates, crocheted clothes for dolls (the kind you get at the craft store to piece together).

@NJChicaa I'm not super crafty myself. I can't crochet or knit much to my chagrin. I like cooking too but I don't get a lot of opportunity to do that.

Yes, sometimes we just do not have the time. Especially if it's when we are getting ready for a party or a holiday.

@rakski I have never baked as gifts but it would be a good idea. I would have to do something that was "no bake" though, as I am not a good baker.

I really don't try new products because sometimes they are not fully tested.

You are right. Especially those things that are made by companies not certified by the government.
