What gift is this?

I don't think I wrote about yesterday's birthday party. The Birthday Boy turned five but was tiring by the time he blew out the candles. He fell asleep on the way home, and I didn't think he'd make it that long.
But most importantly, I scored some wonderful leftover Indian food. Horse Jr. and I helped the child's parents unload the car after the party, and they "rewarded" us with "all we could eat" of the leftover food.
I brought home what is shown in the picture, and Birthday Boy's parents brought me some more food today. His dad and I had an interesting conversation on my balcony about Indian v. American values, and he admitted that he wants to return to India at some point. I'll provide more details another time, or maybe in comments.
Most importantly, I have enough delicious food to last me a couple of days. I'll talk about the turtles and ducks we fed by hand in another post.

Pony ji... a) If you were invited to the party, then it is fine to be given left over foods. If not, DO NOT ACCEPT IT FROM ANY INDIAN. Is that clear?
We usually give left overs to poor and house helps. It is not considered good thing to give to neighbors too.
If you understand what I mean. It is kinda looking down...sigh.
If, however, you were invited to the party, then it is an honor, a way to treat you as family member.

@TheHorse No. It would not. I am proud of Horse Jr. If you are invited and the food offered is remaining and hosts have not given it all to you two and the dish given is something that everybody has liked, usually sweets, then you have decent neighbors.
Here is an example of when it would be an insult. My little friend's mom stopped celebrating his birthdays and started donating monies instead (something happened at the time of his 1st birthday party). His maternal grandma now prepares a cake and brings it down for essentially family celebration. His paternal grandma gave me two pieces of that cake two days after the kiddos birthday. Even my house help felt hurt that they looked down upon me.
I am accustomed to being looked down as I am unmarried and childless. And that when I am educationally and financially at least three times better off than her. I tend to keep low profile lest such people start asking monies and then ridicule me more.
Latest on list is my milkman. He openly asks what will you do with monies you have no kids no husband. When I said I want to enjoy, he laughed what enjoy, at this age. He is pestering from last month and a half. Before that it was washerwoman, but I was able to snub her. This guy is really behaving obnoxiously. There are no laws against such harassment out here. I can only fight verbally, and yet have to control my tongue lest these people feel so hurt that they gang up and harm me and my father.

Oh, I was invited to the party. And it felt like an honor to receive the food. Here's a nuance: Horse Jr's mom, who is from Croatia, was also inivted to the party. But she was tired from work and let me take Horse Jr. to the party. When they offered her food, she (well, Martin on her behalf) refused it. I told Martin accept a "sweet" or two, even if he decided later not to eat it. Would refusing offered food be seen as an insult?

We had a great conversation with an Indian taxi driver one evening and he can't wait to return to India where they'll live near to his parents who are dying to share lots of stories and traditions with their grand-children. The kids are anxious to return to India too where they will live in the country and have much more freedom in terms of being able to run around safely outside. It was a bit of a bitter pill for me to swallow to have someone say they can't wait to leave Australia but it was still very interesting.

My 5-year-old's dad said similar things. What made him most lonely here, he said, was how closed off Americans are toward each other. In his village, doors are always open, children play together in the streets (the Indian kids here do do that here with their parents watching) and the grownups hang out and tell stories when not working.

You could ship me some food, Horse. I did not find much here when I came back. At least nothing prepared.

@andriaperry I'm turning Indian. I really think so. What should I have tonight? I think I'll have frozen macaroni and cheese. Nothing more American than that.

Naan bread, chicken biryani, curd (? or is it rice pudding?). I can't pinpoint the other ones.

That is wonderful glad the family gave you all that food. I am sure the birthday boy relived it all in his dreams.
