I've been waiting for this job to be 100% finished since we got back from our little Gulf Coast getaway! We put the finishing touches on yesterday and finished up late afternoon. Woohoo!
For those of you who were not following, my husband had some repairs to be done (plumbing to both toilet and vanity) in our hall bathroom and I wanted new flooring. This was the perfect opportunity to get the floor because he ended up having to rip it all out anyway.
My mom and I went to Biloxi along with one of my daughters, Christy for five days so that he could get this job all done. This we thought was a good idea and time for him to complete the project. Upon return, it was not finished and a lot of work was still to be done. It wasn't that he didn't work, he ran into an unforeseen problem.
The problem was that when he pulled the toilet out he found that the supporting lumber under the floor was partially rotted. This made him pull out all the flooring to see the rest of the floor in that room. The bathroom had been "updated" before we bought the house and we have found several things that this repairman really screwed up. The cedar beams that are original to the house are all in perfect shape. It's the support lumber that was added that apparently was not even treated lumber that were all going bad. All of this had to be ripped out and another trip to the hardware store for new support lumber--treated lumber.
This is what my husband worked on most of the time we were away. I helped out at nights and weekends to get the job completed. We ran into more problems along the way--keep reading!
The flooring was put in and looked great after installed. The hubby did a good job in picking out the pattern and color. It is probably what I would have chosen. He asked for my suggestion and I said maybe a grey color and woodgrain pattern. That is exactly what he bought. See photo of new flooring above.
Next issue was to reinstall the toilet. Everything went fine until he went to replace the flange. He has purchased a "universal" flange and it did not fit. Another trip to the hardware store. Guess what? No flanges in that size. Note it is a Sunday afternoon so not many choices of places to shop. We wanted the bathroom finished that weekend, but it didn't happen. He decided to just buy a new toilet. That meant hauling the old one back out of the house and hauling a brand new one in.
We didn't finish the project that night, but at least my mom could use the toilet during the night and not have to walk through our bedroom to the Master Bathroom.
The next week my husband was too tired after work to do any work on the vanity plumbing or get it back in the bathroom. This was all done yesterday (Saturday). I'm just glad the project is over and done with. I know he is too.
So how do you like the new flooring?

I'm glad it's all done! That is the exact flooring I want in our bathrooms. The fixtures and countertop have black in them; and the gray would be really nice.

@LindaOHio Those crevices that look good are evil! That would be very annoying.

@kareng Thank goodness! Our countertop is all black and has an indented design that catches all the dust and dirt. It's horrible. I can't wait to get rid of it and change it to a gray-ish color and flat design.

@crazyhorseladycx The bones of this house are great. It's the tweaking this carpenter did for the previous owner. She was quite a person that fell for pushovers you can say. Looks can be very deceiving!! Most of the things he did was just dumb. Most people who are not even carpenters know to use treated lumber on a house.

We had already turned the water off to the sink in the vanity due to the leak. He knew the plumbing was not good because of the shortcuts and rigging that was visual. The crooked pipes coming up from under the house was a surprise. Why would someone leave pipes in a bind like that? This guy was no professional at anything he did. He was actually at our first walk through to answer questions. After my hubby made a few comments about a few things, he zipped his lips.

Oh wow, that sounds really busy @kareng I hope you'll get a chance to get some alone time in but that'll be hard given your situation with your mom. Have you checked with your state to see if maybe they have a program that will give some relief to caregivers?
