Soapy Memories

The kitchen that comes into mind is the one in the trailer that I lived in from around age 9 to age 14, though it may have been that she did the soaps and candies in the kitchen in our old apartment as well. The memory of her actually creating the soaps are foggy but I can see the finished products. White seashells that she would give as gifts to the family. Then there were the melted candies, those were my favorite. I can recall eating an entire bag of the melt-able candies with her on the way home from craft stores. I can still taste the flavor of the candies though it's been absolute ages since I've had them. My aunt said "Your mom would be proud to see you doing these things." this was in regards to me telling her about the whipped soap that I want to make. My mom was a crafter and she didn't stay with just one medium. So yeah, this soap making adventure isn't just fun for myself (and possibly friends if I can drag them into it) but also another way to keep my mom close to my heart. Is there anything you do today that reminds you of good times with family?

That sounds like fun, I haven't made my own soap yet, but would love to try sometime. Unfortunately memories I have as a child are different now. Like when we went camping, it was planned out and we left on time. My family, mostly my husband, doesn't plan it out or pack anything until the day we are supposed to leave so we end up leaving later and by the time camp is set up, I am too tired to enjoy the first day.

My family was always like that too, planning in advance. We'd have things ready or nearly ready before we left. We only ever went about two and a half hours away but still. I think not planning things out would get to me too much. I used to have friends like that but I think I rubbed off on then and they on me. They now plan a little bit better and I am a little more relaxed with some things and let things be. Edited to Add: I went on a trip with my last boyfriend and he hadn't even called the hotel in advance. That was partially on me because he wasn't sure if I would want to spend the night (our relationship was new) but I decided I would HOURS before we got to the place and he still waited until the last minute to call. Irked me a bit. We ended up having to change our plans.

@Carmelanirel2 Oh that would be fun. I like camping later in the year when it is cooler and there's less or no worry over the skeeters!

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was hoping to camp out this year, but it doesn't look like we can, we won't know until the day before we leave.

Never have tried to do that but I've watched videos of people making it. There's some lady that does like rainbow colored pasta that is fun to watch.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It isn't difficult if you have a Kitchenaid Mixer and the pasta attachment

@NJChicaa I have two kitchenaid mixers actually, but no attachment. (I inhertied my mom's but it is at my dad's and then I got my grandmother's). Might have to look into getting an attachment as I am sure it's not too expensive.

That's a good tradition. We had a Friday Night pizza and chinese tradition here.

@JustBhem Ah, I understand that. You see him every once in awhile, don't you? Even if he doesn't come to the house?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I see. But those happened in the past. Since Father is not living with us anymore, we miss his cooking.

Those are wonderful memories. I don’t think I’m doing anything that reminds me of family, because those are painful memories for me.

Oh i see. I understand the painful memories part. I do not talk to my father's family (what is left of them) because I had painful memories growing up.

My mom did many things. I have my own things that I do. Both of us tended to flit from one thing to another. She also took college writing classes in her older age (about my age). They were audited classes, meaning she did not get grades and also did not pay or paid just a tiny bit.

Oh. I am sure she had a lot of fun with those classes. They were creative writing courses, or just grammar type classes? I know you garden and I think you grow herbs don't you? You can sew as well if memory serves.. Sewing is something I've always wished I could do.

When I bake I think of my mom, she baked the most delicious things.

My mother could also bake, but she wasn't a very good cook otherwise. I can't bake but I am a halfway decent cook.
