I Can’t Face It

Doodles the cat lives in our home in Connecticut for six months of the year until we return to Florida. He is our son’s cat, but I love Doodles so much that our son lets him live with us. Our son lives nearby, so drops by often to visit with us and Doodles.
Doodles is very ill with a few genetic heart conditions. He can’t be cured, but is being treated with multiple medications 3 times a day.
Our son stopped by for a visit last evening. Since his other precious kitty, Kuma, is buried in our rock garden, he wants Doodles to be buried next to her when the time comes.
He suggested that we should dig a grave before we leave for Florida, just in case it’s necessary. I was in shock and told him that I couldn’t bear looking at a waiting grave.
My husband suggested waiting until it was necessary and hiring a truck or gravedigger to dig if the ground is frozen solid in the winter.
We left it at that. I adore Doodles as if he were my own little baby boy. I’m going to take him out for a walk right now, because that’s what makes him happiest.

I'm so sorry, Dianne; but the time may come when you have to make a hard decision. Make his life as happy as you can and enjoy his company as much as you can. That's all you can do.

@LindaOHio It’s like losing a member of the family. I’m being optimistic that he will be with us longer than expected.

I think you’re quite wise to wait until you need the grave to dig it. Using that mentality, we should go dig our own graves now because we’re gonna need it one day!

Sometimes we have subconsciously dug our own graves.

The vet said he can go any time. One chamber of his heart has thickened, even with the meds, and two chambers are holding their own. He has an enlarged heart and a valve that leaks blood into his heart. The vet told us that we can only fight genetics. So far, he seems to act his normal crazy and lovey self. We watch him like a hawk.

I would be the same way. I would deal with it when it happens. The medication could allow him to live for many years. Just enjoy the time you have with him and when it comes times they you can deal with it then.

Oh that is sad..I know how much you love Doodles. When my kitty passed away in December it was horrible..one of the top 5 saddest events of my life. He was such a good, smart and sweet boy and was from the get go. He had heart issues as well. I like little Nico, but it just isn't the same..

Thank you. I know how heartbroken you were and I certainly felt your pain and heartache. Poor baby.
We discussed it, and are not going to have any pets anymore. Our grand doggies are getting old, too. I just can’t take these losses anymore.

So sorry to hear this it seems cats are prone to many things. I wish the very best for Doodles and hope he will still be around for some time, My Sid has become senile and has gone off I have no idea where but for me it is a bit different because he is 13 and if anything happens I know all he wants is to be with his beloved Papa and that will be fine with me at this point Virtual hugs and a kiss for Doodles from the crazy cat lady

@DianneN it must be at least a month now but he does have a chip also I just know him if he gets brought back he won't be too happy at least at first if he does not remember much I just thought since he had been healthy all his life that he would just continue to live on the roof
