Bobbing for Apples Was a Lot of Fun on Halloween

When we went to Halloween parties as kids, we always bobbed for apples. A big tin washtub or bin was filled with water and apples floated on the surface of the water. We would kneel in front of the tub with floating apples with our arms behind our backs. We would then try grab an apple with only our teeth only. The first kid to grab a bobbing apple with his or her teeth received a small prize along with the apple to eat. Bobbing for apples goes all the way back to the invasion of Britain by Rome beginning in AD 43. Back then, young men and young ladies who were not yet married would try to bite into an apple that was floating in water or an apple hanging from a string that was tied to a line while holding their arms behind their backs. A young lady who successfully bit into an apple would place her bitten apple under her pillow so that she would dream of her future sweetheart. The bitten apple belonging to a lovely maiden would be placed underneath the her pillow to allow her to dream of her future sweetheart. Photo: sheknows

Maybe we should give bobbing apples a try and put our apple under our pillows. Maybe we were meant for someone different. Oh, too late. Forget I suggested that.

@Marty1 Some kids would stick their entire head in the water. I don't think I did, though.

I confess I never did because I was a bit disgusted to see all those people placing their mouth in the water.

It is funny that we never got sick from doing this. I suppose we had good immune systems.

@Corbin5 We had a good immune system because our body had to fight with colds and flu. Protecting too much is wrong, my brother (he is a doctor) always tells me how dangerous it is to try to live under a clean dome.

I am probably the only one who never did this, went to parties, that never had us do this. I would have bit the stem if I could get it, to pull the apple up.

We do have that kind game for the kids or even the adults. Instead of water on the tub we tie the apples, suspend them on air or hanging it on clothesline. The contestants' both hands are tied on their back.

I bobbed for apples when I was a kid, but I don’t think many places do this any more because it is considered unsanitary in this modern sterile world we live in.

@Corbin5 That's why we have such good immune systems! Exposure to all those germs helped build up resistance!
