He Said My Number Has Lost Its Way

Another conversation with my 90 y/o uncle. Love this man. The weekends and Monday's when his nurse is not there, as I have said before, he gets in his head. The last two weekends have been pretty much ok. But today he started talking about his humber again. He said last weekend he was waiting on his number. He means he is waiting for God to call him home. That is how he says it. I managed to change the subject again. He kept going back to his number, and I kept interrupting and was finally successful. I started talking about the birds and just anything I could think of. It worked. For now. His nurse returned tomorrow. She will keep him occupied. I called my cousin. She is blind but she knows how tot all to him as well. She will talk politics, the weather, anything, as I do, to keep his mind occupied. So, between the two of us, we are helping him from far away to survive another weekend. I believe that. When he gives up, I think he will be gone. We are always trying different subjects to keep his mind occupied. Hope you all have had a good day. And have a good evening as well. His phone calls can be draining, but as I keep saying, I will continue them for as long as it takes. Never take those you love for granted. Tell them you love them every chance you get.

No he doesn't remember them. Sadly. I try to start one I know and see if he can finish it and he can't. But I keep trying.

I just wish I lived closer than 500 miles. No, my cousin is another niece. He outlived his two children.

Can he think cognitively still? I'm wondering if you and he can write or tell a story together. You start off the conversation by saying, "We're going on a trip. Now you decide where we're going." And then let him think of a destination. Then the two of you can go back and forth adding to the story. Do you think that would work?

His dementia comes and goes. He will forget in the middle of his sentence often. This frustrates him of course. Depends on the day but I am open to trying anything. Thank you for this suggestion.

You, your cousin, and his caretaker are doing the very best you can for him. It must be so difficult, but you seem like a very bright and patient human being. He is blessed to have you in his life. You are right about not taking those you love forgranted.

@DianneN Heartbreaking every time we talk because he is the oldest in the family and always the strong one and in charge. Nothing physically wrong even at his age, only the dementia.
