The People’s Promise Joshua 24:15-18 Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. 16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; 17 For the LORD our God, he it is who brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: 18 And the LORD drove out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore, will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God. We all have good intentions. With heartfelt passions, we say things we mean and intend to follow through with. For forty years Israel trod through the wilderness. They rebelled against God and God chastised them, and caused them to wait forty years before bringing them into the promised land. The time had come for them to pass over, and Joshua reminded them of where they came from and the rebelliousness of their hearts toward God and put a pledge before them to serve God. With all their heart they pledged themselves to God and proclaimed Him as their God and to serve only Him. We know what happened. Joshua was barely cold in the grave when Israel turned away from God and served false gods, forgetting all He did for them in bringing them out of Egypt. As Christians, many of you have seen this verse on plaques and you made this promise that you and your house would serve the Lord. How is that going for you? Do you serve God? Does your household? I pray for my children to serve God because I know they don’t. I want that verse to become real for me and my family. It’s a promise I hope to see fulfilled. In the meantime, I will serve the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Acts 16:31 And they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.’ (KJV) Let’s pray: Father, I pledge my life to You, to serve You, to trust You, to worship You, and to give You glory for all You will do in my life and in the lives of my house, my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They are Yours Lord, as I am Yours. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 24 October 2019 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay. Only topic-related comments accepted.
