Pumpkin or Squash

Halloween is coming. Everywhere you go, shopping malls, grocery stores, schools, parks, restaurants, etc. you see a lot of Pumpkins.
Pumpkin or Squash are very common during Halloween. They used it for decoration to catch the attention of the people and the children's.
The picture was taken when I was in the Outlet Store.
Do you have any idea why they used it for Halloween?
And Did you see Pumpkin or Squash in different type?

@Gracezy Back in times the Celts carved "turnips" during the festival of of Samhain, that was at the end of October. They believed that bringing those "lanterns" would have protected them from the evil spirits. Pumpkins and gourds did not exist in Europe before the discovery of America. The Americans use pumpkins instead of turnips.
