Watched Rugby -- Say WHAT?!!!

My husband and I were both up in the middle of the night; and they had a live program from Japan with a rugby "playoff". Wales and South Africa were playing; and we've never really watched a game before.
While a couple of things were like American football, we didn't understand most of the game. The fact that they actually had penalties surprised me because it looks pretty much like anything goes during this rough-and-tumble game.
By the way, South Africa won 19-16.
Have you ever watched rugby? Do you know the rules?

All I know is that they pile up every couple of minutes and have no protective gear on. The only similarities to football are getting the ball in the end zone and kicking for extra points.

Japan at the moment is obsessed with Rugby. I believe there is an anime and there is a manga that I am reading at the moment so I am trying to understand Rugby a little bit.

I need to read up on the rules. Anything goes; but they still manage to get penalties. For what? I don't know! lol

We don't have rugby here and I rarely watch it but I will see if I can find bits of that game on YouTube and watch a bit.
