"Dirty Dancing" is a romantic-drama dance film released in 1987. It is written by Eleanor Bergstein and is based on her childhood. The soundtrack went multi-platinum and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" received a Golden Globe, an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Duet. With a budget of only $6 million this movie made a whopping $214.6 million.
CAST
Patrick Swayze - Johnny Castle
Jennifer Grey - Frances "Baby" Houseman
Cynthia Rhodes - Penny Johnson
Jerry Orbach - Doctor Jake Houseman
Jane Brucker - Lisa Houseman
Jack Weston - Max Kellerman
Lonny Price - Neil Kellerman
Kelly Bishop - Marjorie Houseman
It's the summer of 1963 and 17-year old Frances "Baby" Houseman is on vacation with her parents, Dr. Jake and Marjorie and sister, Lisa. They are staying at Kellerman's, an upscale Catskills resort. Max, the owner, is a friend of Jake's. Kellerman's looks just like you'd expect it to with people taking part in all kinds of activities.
Baby goes exploring one night and overhears Max talking to the waiters, all Ivy Leaguers, and telling them to schmooze the daughters of the guests...no matter what they look like. He then clamps down on the entertainment crew and lets the dance instructors know that there will be no funny business with the guests' daughters -- if they pay for lessons, teach them to dance...and that's all.
Baby meets Billy who is a cousin of Johnny Castle, one of the dance instructors. He secretly takes her to one of the staff's dirty dancing parties. There she is attracted to Johnny and gets to dance with him briefly.
Baby finds out that Penny is pregnant by Robbie, a womanizer and waiter, who now has his eye on Lisa, Baby's sister. Robbie has refused to help Penny get an abortion and, besides that, she would have to miss the gig at a nearby resort, thus sacrificing her season's salary and Johnny's too. Baby volunteers to stand in for Penny and give her the money for the abortion which she must borrow from her father.
Are you one of the few people that hasn't seen "Dirty Dancing" yet? The music and the dancing are reason enough to watch this movie; but the acting and the story line are excellent as well. Be sure to pay attention to Cynthia Rhodes as Penny Johnson. Her dancing skills are amazing! I highly recommend getting the movie and the soundtrack for your collection. This is a movie to watch again and again.
This movie is rated PG-13.
