Straddling the Line

Standing in two states at once, at Cumberland Gap. Photo taken by and the property of FourWalls.

There are a few places in the country that boast of their location in two states. Most famous, probably, is the "Four Corners" monument where Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico meet. There's also the city of Bristol, which is on the border between Tennessee and Virginia. Texarkana also has a state border running through the city, in that case Texas and Arkansas (hence, the town's name). Although it isn't widely touted as a "tourist stop" while visiting the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, there are a couple of places where you can enjoy multiple states at once. A hike will take people to the Tri-State Peak, where the borders of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia converge in the park. I exhausted my hiking abilities walking to the waterfall, so on this day I skipped that hike, which is rated at "moderate" (depends on your stamina, of course). It's something I'd like to do in the future, though. Much more easily accessible is the Kentucky/Virginia line, clearly marked on the walking pavement on the way to the Pinnacle Overlook. A number of people were taking pictures of family and friends sitting in both states. A passerby took my photo there as well. As I respect y'all and want to save your eyes, I'm posting instead the photo I took of one foot on each side of the line. If this line is correct, I parked in Virginia and walked to Kentucky. No wonder I'm tired.

It is so funny to park your car in Virginia and walk to Kentucky. I went to see the Equator in 1994. I stood in with one leg north and one leg south of the earth which I thought was amazing. I was in Kenya in 1997 and there was no line to say where Tanzania began. One of friends said there are some places in Belgium in the Netherlands. A person lives between those two countries.

If I drive to Anthony TX I could do the same, Anthony is also in New Mexico. In the 70s there was a bar in Anthony that sat on the divide so that people had to adhere to NM law on one side and TX law on the other. I don't know what happened to it. I never actually went there but I've driven through the 2.

Haha. That sounds a long way to walk! From Virginia to Kentucky. Actually, I'd almost forgotten but we walked from Germany to Switzerland. :)

I was wrong about the spot with three states. The photo shows where I stood. I have been to Four Corners and Texarkana.

lol. This reminds of an amusement park we have called Carowinds. The amusement park runs between North Carolina and South Carolina. Near the entrance, there is a line that marks both states.

I've done this on the Peace Bridge between Canada and the U.S. I'd like to go to the Four Corners.
