I'm trying to learn Welsh.

I'm trying to learn Welsh. I haven't got very far yet really. I'm not that good at retaining information. I've got plenty of books to help me learn Welsh and a few apps on my tablet to help. I hope to learn Welsh because one day I want to go and live in Wales. Not that it really matters because most people in Wales speak English these days anyway. But we should keep the Welsh language alive. There are many words in Welsh that are similar to English words, so that helps. But the Welsh word for please is long and has about three words in it!

Nos Da!
Yeah, I tried to learn welsh but ultimately gave up. I do remember some words. I had bought a few dictionaries that were recommended from omniglot.com I think. Duolingo is fun and it was helpful for me. The mutations are the worst to learn, and I didn't even get so far as to really attempt to learn those.
Rhod GIlbert (I think was his name) did a joke about learning Welsh that I found amusing, you can find that clip somewhere on youtube if you care to listen to it.
I see your in the UK, you may be able to find classes for Welsh if that's a route you'd like to take. I came across a site once, I can't recall it's name, but it is where fluent speakers will talk to you in the language you want to learn.
Are you trying to learn North or South Welsh?

Er. Probably South mainly because I really want to go and live in Cardiff. I know things like good morning, good night and thank you and those easy words that sound the same in English like Cinema!

@sharonelton Yeah, I can remember those. Siaced and Siocled are somewhat easy to remember since they rhyme. I think North and South are interchangeable in that most from the North understand the South and vice versa. Welsh in one of the dying languages, but they still have signs written in Welsh which I think is wonderful.
Have you tried Saysomethinginwelsh.com?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Thank you. Diolch! It's sad that Welsh is a dying language and the Welsh people should keep it alive and teach it to their kids. I really do want to learn Welsh and I'm not going to give up.

I have dipped in and out of learning Welsh. I can say 'good morning', etc. I can count to 6, and I can ask for fish and chips. I haven't got much further, although I would like to. There is a Welsh language course on Open Learn (Open University's free online site). I know there are others but I like that one.

@sharonelton Yep, it's rather a long one! We only counted to number six because that was so hard to say. My eldest son was also 6 years old at the time we tried to learn together. He wanted to learn Welsh and Polish as that's his heritage on his dad's side. We have dipped into it on and off but I don't think he's particularly interested in languages so much nowadays.

I can say a few easy things but I'm having trouble with the Welsh for please! It's a bit of a tongue twister!

@pumpkinjam I read a bit more Welsh in a little book today. I was looking at how to say things like I am dancing, she is eating and they like coffee!

Wales is a lovely place to visit , and it is good to keep the old language alive so carry on with learning the language. All languages are hard to learn to begin with. I learned Spanish for five years at school but I do not remember much of it now.

Thank you, I will. I learned a bit of French at school and I can still remember some of it but I have forgotten a bit of it.
