We’re getting older

Each year, we usually manage to find enough firewood for our needs, either on our property or from the bush that surrounds us. However, Vince has bursitis in one shoulder and using a chain-saw is difficult for him at the moment. He can’t even play golf so I know he isn’t just putting up an argument! It’s the end of winter but firewood is relatively cheap at the moment so we bought a truckload. It was off-loaded yesterday. All we have to do now is stack it in our little woodshed. There doesn’t look to be much in the photo but we’ve already spent an hour moving some of it. We’ll do a bit each day until it is all under cover. Then it can cure until we need it in April or May. Having to buy wood is another sign that we’re slowing down. But it happens to us all.

That is what my doctors are telling me when I come to visit them with my foot ailment.

Some things the doctors seem to expect you to put up with. They're not always interested in trying to keep you healthy.

@JudyEv Thank you for sharing that information with me. I know that not all doctors have my best interest in mind.

That is understandable. Its better to buy now than do the physical work getting them. Being old has its advantages and disadvantages. We all cannot avoid reaching that state I guess.

The wood is a bit cheaper now and we can get it all organised before next winter.

You're right. they are huge. I'm not sure all of them will fit in the fire-place. Vince might have to split some of them.

Yes, that's true and we could always pay a backpacker to stack it for us if necessary.

Such a lovely photo. And sweet chunks of wood. Your photo brings back to me Idaho days. Gads I was tons younger then! You have done a lot already and yet there is always more waiting to be done. Your speaking of aging is what I feel myself- and why I will most likely go through the proceedings of divorcing this land that is mine right now. Just a few fleeting years and I will slam the door.

I had to give up my beloved ponies but it got to the stage where looking after them was becoming 'work' rather than 'pleasure'. The same will happen here one day, just as you're saying.

Lol to knowing that he wasn’t just putting up an argument because he can’t even play golf. I sometimes pretend I can’t wash the dishes because I have a headache or something. Haha

Look at it in a positive way. You probably have a fireplace. I am forbidden to have one in my over polluted city.

Yes, we have a fireplace which is why we need the wood. I have an idea such fires aren't allowed in our cities either.

@Tampa_girl7 Once one of us loses our licence we'll have to seriously consider moving. Hopefully not for a few years yet. We'll just have to give in and pay for a few maintenance issues if Vince can't manage them. Things like cleaning gutters or clearing trees from fences.

@judyev Do you get snakes hiding in your woodpile? We weren’t allowed near the woodpile growing up for that reason. Didn’t stop us though.

That was always a danger when I was growing up too but we've never had one here. I guess subconsciously we are always a little on the alert for snakes but it doesn't impact on us much.

Ouch, why is the title like that? Anyway, we had experienced using the firewood for the fireplace in a mountain resort called Baguio City where temperatures can be below 10 C. It was pine wood that I bought and the flames were pretty good. It also exudes a nice scent.

It certainly does happen to us all. I'm noticing that as I've hit my 50s I fall foul of a plethora of niggly little aches and pains which appear out of the blue and then disappear again after a while. Although I do have a pain in the neck which is showing no signs of abating after 30 years. But Mrs. WorDazza does have her redeeming features I suppose!!

@JudyEv I am finding I'm having to cut certain exercises out of my routine as they don't do my knees any favours these days. As the saying goes though, don't let what you can't do stop you from doing what you can do.

At least it's in your neck and not some other place!! What stops you sitting down, so to speak! The trouble with the small aches and pains that you gradually come to realise it's the new norm - just like becoming deaf. It's never going to get better so you really have to make the most of how well you are at any given time.

My father and I use to go out into National Forest, for wood to burn. He bought a permit to take any fallen trees, within a certain area. As Dad got older, he had to purchase wood for their winter supply. We don't burn wood any longer.

In some areas you need a permit but in other places you can take fallen timber. I would sometimes go for a walk after a storm looking for trees that might have blown that we could get to.

@JudyEv Some people here have violated and cut standing trees! That's why they had to clamp down, trying to stop the blatant dishonesty, of a few.

I can relate to that though not with woods but turf. When we were living in Ireland, we had to order truck loads of turf for the winter.
