What I am bringing to Thanksgiving

United States

Well, I can't find the recipe for my grandmother's dressing and so I am going to have to do my best to recreate it based off of memory and what my aunt remembers of the ingredients. I think I'll be able to mimic it somewhat, but I am sure it won't be quite the way she used to make it. I'll look again to see if I can find the recipe, but I am not holding my breath. I am also making her cheeseball, but I was able to find that recipe with no problems. I was thinking I might make Strawberry Pretzel Salad but I might make a no bake cheesecake or something else entirely instead. The dressing I'll take to my families house, the cheeseball and dessert will be to a friend's house for friendsgiving. I thought about making potato candy for Thanksgiving but I am just not sure I want to deal with it yet, I've go to make some for Cookie Day anyway... What are you making for Thanksgiving? Or, for those not in America, what do you usually bring to a family gathering?

@Tina30219 I saw Pumpkin, Pecan, and even a chocolate pie on sale at our grocery store today. I was tempted, but I didn't pick any up.

I could make the pumpkin bread since I have all the ingredients for it, but I'm not sure if I will. What kind of pie will you be taking?

I always get asked to bring the dressing to our family's Christmas. We have a big family and I have a wonderful recipe which is made right in the slow cooker. Good luck with recalling the recipe that you cannot locate, maybe writing it down will help.

I've been asking family as I've recalled things, just to see if their recollection is the same as mine. I think my grandmother would get corn bread and bake it the night before then the next morning she would crumble it up and add the seasonings and chicken stock to it then bake it. She also added onions and celery but I'll have to use onion powder since my aunt is allergic to onions.

@Juliaacv I'd say that you are missing out, but Cornbread is one of those things that people either really like or really hate. I won't eat just a plain piece of cornbread, but I'll have it with beans or in a beef stew. I'm not sure if she used parsley. I've found a recipe online that is similar to what I remember her doing so I am going to loosely follow that.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We don't do corn bread up here. I actually buy the bread cubes and use those, it is a time saver. Don't forget the parsley.

I am bringing a crustless pumpkin pie, rolls, and a regular pumpkin pie from Costco, plus some stuffed celery.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah, but I might put dried cranberries on the top..and I have some flavored cream cheese for some, and I will use regular cream cheese for the others.

@snowy22315 Hmm, that sounds interesting. I like dried cranberries, it's one of the things I'd snack on when at work.

Stuffed celery? Like ants on a log type? I've had a crustless Pumpkin Pie (also low sugar) and it's good. I thought about making pumpkin bread (I have the stuff to make it) but I am not sure if I'll make that for the whole family or just for us here.

I'm making a baked ham, candied yams, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing/dressing, broccoli casserole, fried squash, watergate salad, deviled eggs, fried cornbread, cranberry sauce, sweet tea, pumpkin pies, chocolate pies, and cheese cake. Hope your dressing turns out well!

We do Ambrosia here, but I have wondered how Watergate Salad would taste. That's a lot of stuff to prepare. Are you starting early on Thursday, or will you do some of it on Wednesday night?

@1creekgirl Oh well that's good. You won't have to do it all alone then. Our Thanksgiving starts at noon. I'll make the cornbread tonight and then finish the prep tomorrow. I am feeling a little nervous about it to be honest, it's the first time I've made it by myself.

This is the first time I've heard of potato candy. I wonder how it tastes.

It's really sweet. It takes about 1 lb of confectioner's sugar. It's like a jelly roll type of confectionary. Peanut butter in the middle.

@Alexandoy You don't really taste the potato but it's still very good. You can find recipes for it online, we make ours a little different but the ingredients are all the same. I made this for friends a few years ago and they saw me eating the remainder of the potato uncooked. They all knew I loved potatoes but had never seen me eat an uncooked potato before.

I got a $20.00 off $20.00 or more coupon and a $5.00 of $65.00 coupon with my grocery store. The only problem was that it was set to expire before I could get the stuff for turkey day, so I'll just have to pay full price for the things I'll get. I like the "bring a dish" style of Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle are making the majority of the food, but people are bringing things.

I am in charge of the mashed potatoes and the green bean casserole (from scratch).

Green Bean Casserole is one of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving, it even over rules the turkey in my opinion.

We will not prepare any in my family only during Christmas day but before when I am overseas I prepare roast turkey and then yorkshire pudding and vegetables for that feast.

I have never had yorkshire pudding but I have always wanted to try it. I know I can find recipes and do it here in the US, I just never have. Have you ever had cranberry sauce?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Depending on my friend, we sometimes want to grill and we put on what to bring, sometimes we want to make a hamburger, then someone brings the meat or chicken or the drink or pizzas we do.

@Aleskys Oh I see, so you don't always bring the item cooked, but will bring hamburger for burgers, or onions etc?
