Glad I read Sherlock Holmes stories.

The other day, I got home from work and was ready to enter my apartment. I reached into my right front pocket to grab my key, and noticed that it was gone. I didn't get flushed, but checked to see that my "plan B" was available. I can open my window and climb in over my desk if I need to. Then I went into Sherlock Homes mode. I didn't take out my pipe (I didn't have one with me) or take a snort of cocaine (cocaine gives me a sinus headache and I don't do it), but I did stand there and think. Doing something odd, like losing keys, usually occurs when there's a break in our daily routine. What had I done differently today from what I usually do? Elementary! I had checked my mail after work (I usually do it on days off), and become distracted, throwing out the junk mail and keeping bills and other things of importance. I went to my mailbox, removed the keys from the key slot, returned to my front door, and entered my apartment. Do you do "problem-solving" in a similar way? Do you agree that a break in "routine" can lead to losing things? Or tripping over something? Or whatever?

At this moment in time I need lists to keep my wandering mind going.

Oh, I send emails to myself to remind me of things I need to do.

@andriaperry Oh, you must be "in town" more than I am in. In Montana (where I have no phone, often), I write physical notes to myself an stuff them in my left front pocket. "Get curtain rods and Watco Danish Oil." Done.

IF I think calmly I do the problem solving thing. Yes, a break in routine can totally mess things up and cause losses and accidents over and over.

In my case, it was only a matter of leaving the keys dangling from the mailbox. I had done it before.

I do this. Go back to where I saw/had it last then try to work through logically. Mostly it works.

@aninditasen Some mysteries I simply can't solve. There are gremlins in my house who hide my guitar picks, flashlights, sanding blocks, and socks.

I had that problem yesterday at work. We have hand-held computers that we use on the sales floor (we call them phones, because you can actually make calls from them, but they are little computers about the size of a smartphone). Anyway, I always carry mine in my sales apron, but late in the afternoon I realized I didn't have mine. Unlike you, I went into panic mode, but then calmed down to retrace my steps to see if I could find it. Considering I had literally been all over the store, I was not successful in finding it. But then the light bulb went off and I had another associate follow me around the store calling my phone, so that I could hear it ringing and then zero in on it. We finally found it.

Wow....That is a terrific Holme method of detection. Cool and collected...Letting the grey cells do the work. I would have hurried around searching here and there

When I misplace my keys, I stop, before I panic, but panic anyway. Then I sit and think back where I had my keys last that I remembered and go back to the place...and there my keys usually is. Usually, is, but if not there, I got back to looking for my keys in places I don't usually put it. I find my keys and get tempted to put it on a lanyards.

My California house, mailbox, and Montana house keys are on the same ring. That helps. They cannot fall out of my pocket in silence.

@TheHorse That's very good. Just got to be careful with keys always. I have them in my pocket for I got to deadbolt lock my door, and I got a pull cart that I put my bag in, while I'm out of home, so I always check if I got my keys and made it a habit. It's like when I leave home, I deadbolt lock and I know I got my keys and I do a check of things I need,...once I left my bus pass in my purse, saw the bus coming reached for my pass not there, then in a hurry I had to search my bag for my pass, whew made it in time before the bus stopped...they like us to have it handy as we board. Sometimes everyday things is blurry, for we have other worries.

We do dozens of things a day without thinking; and that's when things get lost. Toss this here or there...lost! A break in routine can definitely lead to losing something. I'm glad you found your keys.

I (and Horse Jr.) know where everything "normally" lives in my apartment. But "too much happening at once" can lead to disruptions and lost stuff.
