"Jaws" is a thriller which premiered in 1975. The screenplay was written by Peter Benchley and Carol Gottlieb and based on a book by the same name by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg. The ominous theme was created by John Williams. "Jaws" was the highest grossing film of all time until Star Wars was released in 1977 with box office receipts of $470.7 million and a budget of $9 million.
CAST
Roy Scheider - Chief Martin Brody
Robert Shaw - Quint
Richard Dreyfuss - Matt Hooper
Lorraine Gray - Ellen Brody
Murray Hamilton - Major Larry Vaughn
Carl Gottlieb - Meadows
Jeffrey Kramer - Deputy Hendricks
Susan Backlinie - Chrissie Watkins
Peter Benchley - Interviewer
Chrissie Watkins is attending a bonfire party on the beach on Amity Island, New England. Chrissie leads Tom Cassidy away to go skinny dipping with her; but he's drunk and passes out on the beach. Chrissie continues to strip down and moves out into the water. As she gets further out she pauses to tread water. At this point you hear the dreaded ominous music. Suddenly she's violently grabbed by the leg and is dragged from side to side in the water. Her screams fall on deaf ears. She grabs for a buoy but is dragged away. Then there is silence.
Amity is abuzz with preparations for the Fourth of July festivities -- it's a major source of income -- when the word comes down that Chrissie Watkins is missing. Chief of Police, Martin Brody, speaks to Tom Cassidy who tells him where Chrissie was swimming offshore. Brody goes to the beach with his deputy Jeff Hendricks to search for clues. It isn't long before they find the pieces of what used to be Chrissie Watkins.
This movie has a lot of drama and suspense. Whenever we hear the ominous "da-dum...da-dum..." we know that the shark is coming. This is an excellent movie with an excellent cast and a really good score. The shark could look a little more realistic; but for 1975 and the special effects that were available, it's not bad. If you haven't seen it at least once already, I highly recommend it.
This movie is rated PG.

Great movie, great cast and my husband and I often quote 2 lines from the film; both made by Roy Scheider's character, Chief Martin Brody:
"You're gonna need a bigger boat". Sometimes boat is replaced by something else like car, garage or whatever is appropriate for the occasion.
"I can do anything I want, I'm the chief of police". Now that line is always the same. We don't change the wording.

The cast should have included the shark
. My daughters insisted on us taking them to see it. I told them I would not go out of the room if they were afraid. Claudia finally made friends with the man who took the tickets outside of the darkroom
