It wasn't there a minute ago

The photo is of a dessert I had in France. It doesn't really relate to the discussion. If you’re a male, do you have trouble finding things? Is your wife/partner better at finding things than you are? And if you’re female, do you find that your husband/partner misses items even when they’re right in from of him? That happens all the time in our house. If Vince can’ find something, I go and get it for him. It’s easier than trying to explain where he should be looking. If I do try to explain, he says he’s looked and it’s not there. Time and again, I find it right in front of his nose but for some reason, he misses it. Tonight he said we needed to put cooking oil on the order. I said there should be a full bottle as we bought two last time we went shopping. He said he couldn’t find it. I found it where he had just been looking. He said 'it wasn't there a minute ago'. Then he said we were out of Dijon mustard. I said look in the pantry. We both stood there looking and it was right in front of him but he couldn’t see it. I’ve given up telling him to have a ‘proper’ look or have a ‘woman’s look’. Although we joke about it, it p*sses him off as it happens time and time again. I think it is just a man thing. What's your opinion?

My opinion is that women are gaslighting us men. They secretly move stuff around then quickly replace it where they say it is and pretend it was always there.

That's what Vince always said. So then he took to asking me then attaching himself like a leech one step behind me and watching while I found it. He was looking over my shoulder when I found a knife he wanted and he said 'well, b*gger me!' He sounded so surprised. But what's really funny is that both @moffittjc and @arthurchappell liked your comment!

@JudyEv They liked the comment because they know it's true. You're obviously very good at sleight of hand!!!

@WorDazza I'm a woman. I'm good at all sorts of things - except being humble maybe. I don't do 'humble' very well. :(

I sometimes set things down in places and forget where I put them. Usually I am good until my wife comes along and cleans. Often, even she doesn't know where she puts things when she is cleaning. She sticks things in places where they are out of sight. That is the key to her cleaning. I've tried to suggest to her if it something of mine, put it on my desk, I'll take care of it, but she doesn't remember when cleaning. It's like something kinda takes over her mind and only God knows what she does with things.

This can happen too. I don't move anything from around Vince's computer but sometimes when he's there I'll ask can I file this or that or whatever. And I've been known to put things in a safe place then not be able to find them.

@cperry2 I can relate to this. When you need one, nothing else really fits the bill. And anyway, that's not really the point. Where could it have disappeared to? That's the annoying question.

@JudyEv It will likely turn up the next time I go through to get rid of the clutter. If not, oh, well. I think I got my money out of that piece of equipment.

We both do that from time to time too. We have it one minute then suddenly it seems to disappear.

Definitely a man thing. I've done the same thing. It's also a kid thing. I think they get it from their father's.

It used to happen in our home but not too often. Now when something is misplaced we have the magic words.

@Alexandoy Do you pray to St Anthony? He has found a lot of things for us from time to time - but his skills don't extend to finding the cooking oil.

Speaking from personal experience growing up I often could not find an item my Mom asked me to look for. I always thought it was the person providing the directions but it probably was as much my fault. So, I guess a man-Mars Women-Venus scenario. But if you asked me to locate that tasty dessert, I bet I find it

Haha then it's selective 'not being able to find things' in your case. The Men are from Mars, etc book is quite enlightening really, isn't it?

If my wife was not around I would not know where I was at any given moment. I have been known to call her from time to time while on the road..."Please tell me where I am," and then she does, and all is good.

I am undecided if to show this post to my husband or not. I hear many times a day "Anna, where did you put **** I cannot find it?", I go downstairs, I check, the item is just in front of his eyes.

Yeah, they can be clueless. We have a running joke that whenever he can't find something, I tell him it's behind the milk. That came from a video of Rita Rudner when her husband was standing in front of the fridge and couldn't find something.

If it's a document Vince is looking for and it isn't on top of any of the piles of paper, he says he can't find it. He never thinks to pick up any papers and see if it's further down. Behind the milk is funny.
