You shouldn't give a dog a bone

United States

I was just thinking about this a few moments ago. I have seen on some of the groups I have on facebook, an increase of the number of people who talk about their UPS driver or fed ex driver, or postal carrier giving their dogs a biscuit (treat). While I think this is very nice of the delivery person to do, and while I think we can mostly trust these people (that they aren't putting poison in them), I still think it's a bad idea. Why? Dogs have different diet restrictions and allergies just like us humans. Now, I know that not all dogs are on such restrictions, but there are enough that I think that our couriers should leave off with the treats. Atleast until they make sure the dog's human says it's okay. Have you heard of couriers giving treats to the household's pets?

I think it's nice, but I am just thinking of Wilson, a friend's dog who has a lot of allergy problems now and requires a certain diet. The dog treats might have whatever ingredient it is that he's allergic to now.

Ah, well I am not sure if couriers everywhere do this. I don't even think it happens all over the US, but I hear about it from time to time.

@JustBhem I'm not sure of that, to be honest. I think it's just up to the individual person to decide to do.

I wouldn't know if any of ours do it since we don't have any pets. It makes me wonder why some do and some don't. I am assuming it's not a company wide thing. Like, I don't think the UPS corporate office supplies dog treats to the drivers to hand out.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We know must our people that deliver stuff here and they know we have cats and a dog.

@Tina30219 Our mail person changes here. It's usually one of the same two people. As for UPS and Fed Ex, we don't use them as much as we once did and so we have no idea who is delivering.

I know that I would not appreciate, if it's just like people who want to offer candies to kids. It does not matter if there is no danger, it is wrong.

Offering a candy to a child without the mother's or father's consent is very wrong. The child might have an allergy, or perhaps the parent told the child earlier that day that they would not get any sweets.

@LadyDuck My friends border collie has allergy problems. He itches so much and his fur comes off in clumps sometimes. She gives him antibiotics every once in awhile, but has changed his diet and gives him allergy medicine designed for dogs.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is the same for animals, some could have problems and the vet said not to give them some foods.

Those couriers are unique. But we don't give our dogs treats that we didn't buy.

I think it's safer to not give the dogs a treat that you haven't vouched for yourself.

@Alexandoy Pet blessing? I have never heard of this. Is it a national holiday?

@ScribbledAdNauseum last month in the pet blessing, there were many booths giving away baskets of treats and grooming items. We got some to give to our neighbors.

I've only heard about it in the US. I'm not sure if other countries couriers will do this or not. I do not think that it's something the courier company does, but the individual driver does.

@amitkokiladitya I guess it's just different everywhere. Just like the way animals are seen differ from place to place. I've seen that in China that animals are treated differently, and sometimes a lot worse. Like little baby turtles that are put in a plastic aquarium and then attached on a keychain to die.

Yes, I am not sure if it's happened outside of the US, though it might catch on with other carriers across the world.

I have no pet either. I believe this is done only in certain areas, and only in the US so far.

I think only with the owner's permission.

That would be better, especially as the owner would be able to say "no, i don't feed them that brand."

@noni1959 Yep! I've seen dog biscuits that are red in color having been dyed that way. It might be pleasing to our eye, but it's not the humans that are having to eat it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum some are full of dyes and unnatural ingredients too.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Before my dog passed away in March due to old age, I had to keep away from the front door to pick any packages since I was fearful that Poochie would jump them since she did not like seeing strangers even though she was a sweet dog.

I've only ever heard about it in the US, so not sure if it's gotten worldwide exposure yet.
