The continuing elf story

This discussion refers to my previous post So, I walked the student to his car. I SAW his mom go through the backpack, which I had already checked as well. Later that night she said he was having huge fits and she "found" one of his elves in his backpack. (I believe she fooled him. He has several elves. There was nothing in that bag when I gave it to her after school.) At school on Tuesday the boy with the locker next to my student found a surprise elf in his backpack. He had not had homework and had left his bag in his car all night, so he did not look in it. Evidently my student was so wound up when he put his elf away that he put it in the wrong locker and back pack. He tends not to pay attention at times. I am sure this is the truth because the mom of the student who found it is also a para and she knew the elf was missing and would have let us know. Mrs. F. who only is with this student when Jessica is at lunch lets him get his toys out often, in spite of what she has been asked. She goes with him to get them, but did not go with him to put him away. Grrrr. I wish they would not do this. It made a long evening for several people. On the other hand, I am glad it was not someone being mean.
One student I work with is high functioning, but autistic. He brings soft toys in his back pack every day. He can have them on the bus, but puts them away when...

You were more on track than the rest of us. The student tricked himself without knowing it.

@GardenGerty waheehee, that's a lesson to be learned. My brother's son is autistic and he falls into the description of your ward. It is easy to know his moves based on my experience with my nephew.

@Alexandoy Aha, the wisdom of experience.

Yeah, she shouldn't have done that as now he will expect it more often and that can't be really good for anyone.

This is the battle we are fighting. We had it with a girl a few years back, who at times would have as many as fifty "my Little Ponies" in her back pack. Jessica will be gone on Monday, but the note she left for the sub cautions against getting home toys out for a break. I personally do not like "breaks" although we do find things to do for an incentive when he has worked on three things. Right now we are making a paper cone into a Christmas tree.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to work with challenged children @GardenGerty

Yes. I am glad it was his own fault that it was misplaced. I did not want to find that people were picking on him.

That's really good news that there was an explanation for the elves being absent. But a shame the woman can't obey orders. Perhaps now she'll realise how important it is.

Maybe, maybe not. Not really orders as such, and she wanted to reward him for hard work. He is hard to resist. I would like to see him use school items for breaks.

Yes, it was. Jessica says she is going to start hiding the elves or other backpack toys until the end of the day because that other staff member uses them as a reward too much and it is causing problems.

And he understands that he did it himself. The kid where the elf was would never have taken it.

Glad the elf turned up - or at least one of them. I thought you said two were missing? That's an easy mistake to make, especially if people have the same type of bag.

This student has lots of elves, or at least three. He said two were missing, the staff member said that there was only one in his bag. The back packs are not similar, but this is a child with some impulsive disorders and he does not always look at the whole picture. That is how he ended up opening the wrong locker.
