The first place that I lived when I was on HUD (Housing and Urban Development- a subsidized housing program) my boys and I rented a condo from the owner who was a man that worked for the government in Washington DC.
It was 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom on the second floor and was pretty nice. The dishwasher didn't work and it was in the lease that he would have it fixed within' a few months time. We had lived there about 5 or 6 months when all of the sudden the refrigerator died.
I called the landlord and he said that he didn't have to get it repaired or get a new one. I called the HUD office and they sent someone out from the health department who came out and condemned the refrigerator and the dishwasher because there was stagnant water in the bottom of it and after she asked me how long it had been that way, I showed her my lease where it stated that it would be repaired soon. She could not believe that HUD approved that place to be rented!
I borrowed a small compact refrigerator from a church member and me and my boys had to walk to the store daily to get food for dinner and breakfast the next day because it was not big enough to hold any more then that and there was no freezer compartment.
HUD still paid the man and I had to keep paying my rent
The man never did repair either the dishwasher or refrigerator.
