Christmas 2019

We are planning on taking the day before Christmas to make a huge roaster full of stuffed cabbage (we call them pigs in a blanket or pigs). This is a two-man job. My husband will stand and separate the cabbage leaves in the simmering water while I sit at a card table and assemble the stuffed cabbage and layer with sauerkraut and a tomato mixture. My husband has been wanting stuffed cabbage for eons; so this will be a little present for him. Two days before Christmas I will make two cheesecakes...one to eat and one to freeze. Since I have trouble walking and standing, my husband will bring me everything from the pantry and refrigerator...another two-man job! If my husband is really good, I will sit on the kitchen stool and make him some tapioca pudding too! Are you planning on anything special to eat for the holidays? Photo Credit: Free Images

I am going to make tortellini (from scratch) and a Christmas Yule log for dessert. I have not yet decided for the antipasto and the main course.

I had prime rib for lunch today! We had our department holiday luncheon, and that was the main course.

That food in the photo looks like one of my favorites that my mother cooked. We call that Rellenong Repolyo which is cabbage roll with ground beef (or pork) inside.

@LindaOHio rice inside the cabbage roll? Hmm, maybe we can try that. Unfortunately we don't have the recipe that my mother had.

Looks like it's hard to make. How do you keep the leaves from breaking?

You soften them in the simmering water until they are pliable, then fold carefully.

@LindaOHio thanks for the tip. How do you keep them in place, do you use thread to tie?

@florelway You wrap them around the meat mixture and put the ends on the bottom and place in the roaster. They stay without a problem.

First of all that looks delicious! I don't have any big plans as far as a meal goes, but was going to throw some steak in the slow cooker with carrots, potatoes, celery and a ton of garlic in a beef broth. I have made it the last couple of Christmases and love that I can let it cook all day and fill the house with wonderful smells without having to do much work. When my kids were little I used to run around stressed out and trying to put together a six course meal that would take all day to prepare, but now I prefer to spend the time enjoying them rather than stressing out.

Sounds like a great plan, and nice to work together to make those foods. Not sure what the plan is here yet. I think I am supposed to take a vegetable tray to Christmas dinner though. Eww, lol.
