Vacation Home or Timeshare Property?

Do you own a second home or a vacation home?
I always thought it would be nice to have a vacation home in The Bahamas? But that thought never became a reality.
My friends bought a timeshare property where every two weeks out the year they can go and stay there for vacation. The idea of a timeshare, even though I understand that's it's pretty popular, it never appealed to me.
If I'm am going to have a vacation home, it's going to be my own property. I might rent it out two week at a time. I think that would be a much wiser investment than a timeshare.
What do you think? Vacation Home OR Timeshare Property?

@Ronrybs And if the place is hit by a hurricane you have nothing to worry while you are at home and you hear the news about "powerful hurricane hitting the Caribbeans".I even get bored going to the same place every year, the Bahamas are nice if you go there a couple of times, but finally there is nothing interesting to do except go to the beach.

Yes, we have a vacation home in Florida and our main home in Connecticut.
Last year, we decided to change our residency to Florida due to the high income taxes in Connecticut. Now, our home in Connecticut is our vacation home. We spend about 6 months in each place.
We save a bundle and own both homes outright. And, we still travel.
