Do you do crossword puzzles? I love any kind of word game. On December 21, 1913, the New York World published the first crossword puzzle. The New York Times felt that the crossword puzzle was "a sinful waste of time" and declared these puzzles to be dead in 1929. That feeling didn't change until 1942. During World War II it was suspected that crossword puzzles were being used to send secret messages with one man, Leonard Dawe, even arrested but later it was determined that he was innocent. There are many positive aspects to doing crossword puzzles. The National Center for Biotechnology feels that working these puzzles may slow memory decline in patients with dementia such as Alzheimer's by two or more years. It is also said to improve vocabulary and improve brain function.
