An Elephant In Absolute Darkness

I come from a small town that started developing as an industrial hub ten years back.Big industries have acquired huge swathes of land here. Now as you enter the town, you find the whole area punctuated by big alluminium and iron factories that seem to have popped up overnight.
Ten years ago there were dense jungles in this area that were home to wild animals like elephants, leopards, hyaenas, jackals and foxes. Now the habitats of these animals are destroyed by factories.Elephants and leopards have to enter into villages located near the jungles in search of food.
In winter herds of elephants stray into villages at night in search of food. They destroy paddy fields and huts of farmers.
The poor farmers try to drive them out of village by beating drums and burning crackers. At first they succeeded to scare away the elephants, but gradually the beasts got used to sounds of drums and blasts of crackers.
I remember a poor carpenter from a village who we had hired to make some tables. He would turn up every morning, work till afternoon and then leave hurriedly to his village. We insisted him to work for one hour more, but he flatly refused saying ,"Sorry,Sir, I can't.If I leave for village late,it would be dark and that's the time when the elephants are near my village."
One morning he did not come.We thought he was ill.But he turned up next morning and then we came to know what had happened with him.
That afternoon he had left for his village by his bike, but the bike went out of order before crossing the town.He got it repaired and headed towards his village hurriedly. But it was too late for him and absolute darkness had enveloped the jungle when he reached there.
And then while crossing the jungle his bike once again went out of order. He hid the bike in a bush and proceeded ahead at a fast pace towards his village.
But suddenly he stopped. He suddenly realised he was standing hardly two feet away from an elephant.A black elephant standing in pitch black darkness.
"I don't know the elephant saw me or not ,but I quickly recovered myself from the shock and retraced my feet.I started running back and then I heard heavy foot steps approaching me.I ran as fast as I could and only God knows how I reached the main road."He told us.
It was a close shave for the poor carpenter.
Imagine, what if he had not sensed he was about to collide with a black elephant standing in absolute darkness.

@Shivram59 , That is so rue , that is why we get lot of snakes and other reptiles entering our house that we have on the farm as we have invaded their habitat!

@AKRao24 That's the problem.Wild animals are invading our villages only because we have destroyed their habitats. It is we human beings who initiated this "struggle."

That's so difficult on one hand we need more industries for development and on the other we cannot destroy the woods

@akalinus I fully agree with you.Destruction of green cover has an adverse effect on the quality of life. But is the so called development possible without cutting trees and clearing jungles??

@Butterfingers You are right.Development should not be achieved at the cost of nature.Development is necessary, but saving trees, jungles and wild life is equally necessary.

This is the problem with modern development. We invade into animal's kingdom and they invade ours. Both suffer. I think the culprit here is the authority authorising such a development. Green areas should never be allowed to be developed for any purpose residential or industrial. For this environment to survive existence of everybody is necessary. Each one has got its part to play in preserving this environment.

@msdivkar I fully agree with each and every word you said here, but ....and it is a big but...is there anyone to listen?? Population is continuously going up and thousands of trees are being felled everyday. All this is going on in the name of development.Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. We don't know how our future generations will survive.

@Shivram59 Areas for industrial development so also areas under forest cover are clearly demarcated. There is no need for one to invade another's territory. We do this to benefit us and not that there is the dirth of the area for either purpose.

@msdivkar You are right. Here also forest area and industrial area is demarcated, but forest area is under threat from growing population and industries.People invade jungle area and destroys habitat of wild animals.

@Shivram59 Oh yes, and this is important, no developement will be successfull without keeping preservation of nature in mind.
USA is developed but they have protected forests too. 33 percent of the total land area of the US is forest land.

@yugocean I agree with you.But what is the way out?? Can development and preservation of nature go hand in hand??

@yugocean You are absolutely right. But sometimes you have to clear jungles to make roads, establish plants etc.How to protect green cover and ensure development at the same time??That's the question.

It is a shame that progress does that to the habitats of animals.

@Shivram59 Yes, I did. We often don't see the elephant in the room. We pretend it is not there and we talk about things that do not matter.

@akalinus Thanks for visiting the post.He could not see the black elephant standing in pitch black darkness. The beast would have killed him had he not fled in opposite direction.

Oh, I'd be terrified, and if I always thought elephants wouldn't attack humans.
