I just learned about something called a "StingRay" device. It's used to conduct cell phone surveillance,as I understand it often warrantless surveillance. The same people who brought the use of such devices to my attention also noted that they are a clear violation of the 4th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
The 4th Amendment (for anyone not up on their knowledge of the Constitution) states:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
There is a saying that "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" but I argue that people have the right not to have their personal lives, effects, and spaces violated without due cause.
