I think I want to prepay

I only have a few bills, but I am thinking I'd like to do some prepaying on some of them. I know that there are mixed reviews on whether this is a good thing or not. Some say that it makes a person feel as if they have more money than they really do, which causes them problems down the line. Others say that it's a great way to get ahead.
There are some companies that won't allow you to prepay.
I am thinking I'll start with my cellphone bill because a) I've done it before and b) It's technically a prepaid service anyway. I was thinking I'd like to try to pay two months at a time instead of one. Or, if not that, then atleast my monthly bill + an extra $20.00.
I know one person here already does this type of thing to some success.
Do you prepay your bills?
If not, why not?
If you do, is it beneficial?
Is this something you would do?
*To clarify, I don't mean just paying before the due date but also paying a larger amount.

@mrki444 Oh okay, I understand that. Are you not leasing per 6 month or 12 month period?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes but I don't want to prepay it since I don't know how long I will be in this apartment.

I always add extra whether it's an extra $10 or on good months, double. I also prepay inputting a date earlier than due. My goal by May is to only have one bill besides my insurance and that type of thing. I pay that in nine months instead of 12 so it saves some money too.

I am glad it works for you. I haven't really set a goal for that yet because it's only something I've recently been thinking of. For right now, I am going to try to pay double on one bill. That will help me be able to pay off another. After that, I'll have to reassess.

@TiarasOceanView Yes, you have to try to be prepared for anything. You have to do what works best for you.

I am sort of inbetween. I can scrape a few more dollars together, and that's definitely what I am going to try for this year. I am hoping by doing this I'll get ahead on a bill I really need to get paid and done with.

I think I should clarify more. I don't mean just paying before the due date, I mean paying a bigger amount.

@Juliaacv I don't pay any of our utilities here but I do see how much we spend towards each and try to do my part to keep it as low as possible. The few bills I do have I try to manage as best I can. Each year I decide which bill of mine I can do without, but this year I don't have any bills to do without, that's another reason why I am focusing on prepaying on some of them. I'd like to get ahead on my credit card, for instance.

@ScribbledAdNauseum With a credit card you can make small payments as often as you like which will help you erase the balance quicker then just making monthly payments.
I did that when I was young and ran up our credit card. Tough lesson to learn, but it stuck with me.

Yes, I think that is a good idea. I know last year that when I pre-paid a bit on my cellphone bill, it helped me on months when I needed to pay more on my credit card.

@rakski Yes, and some bills are more important than others. Credit Cards are one of the more important bills for sure.

No, I don't prepay bills. I used to make additional principal payments on our house payment; but we always made sure to have a rainy day fund for emergencies.

Oh okay, I see. I am just trying to get myself a bit ahead on some things. Usually at the beginning of the year I look for things that I can get rid of bill wise, but I didn't need to do that this year so I wanted to do something different.

I very much live on a budget, but I think if I can pay some of my bills in advance it would help me out.

I pay every bill when it is due and pay extra only on credit cards when I have to use them.

I try to pay extra on my credit card but I'm not always able to do that. Actually, prepaying on my cellphone will help me pay extra on my credit card more. I can usually manage an extra $5 towards that purpose, but I want to try for an extra $10 instead.

I have never prepaid so I don't know how that works. My cell phone company automatically takes their fee off of my bank account each month so I don't have to worry about forgetting to pay

I don't like letting my cellphone take it out automatically. I've found in the past that they'll take it out a few days earlier than it's due and sometimes that means it's overdrafting my account. I am usually able to pay it a few days in advance anyway, but I like to be able to do that myself. My cell company sends me a text as reminder.

@amitkokiladitya Yes, It used to be the same for me. I have been able to get away from that a little bit, but there is still one bill that I need to pay off. I am hoping to get that done very soon.

I don't always have the money either. I am going to try my best to prepay this year. If I can prepay even a little bit on one bill, it will mean I have enough to pay more towards another bill that I can ultimately get rid of.

@ScribbledAdNauseum these bills are always a never ending saga for me. By the time I'm done with one the other one pops out.

I have to clarify as I don't think I wrote it clear enough before. I don't mean just paying the bills early, but I also mean paying more towards the bills. So if a bill is $40 you might pay $80 instead.
