"Outbreak" is a medical disaster movie released in 1995. It was written by Laurence Dworet and Robert Roy Pool and is based on the non-fiction book "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. The movie was directed by Wolfgang Peterson and was a box-office success with receipts of $189.8 million and a budget of $50 million. Reviews, however, were mixed. CAST Dustin Hoffman - Colonel Sam Daniels, M. D. Rene Russo - Dr. Roberta "Robby" Keough, M. D. Morgan Freeman - Brigadier General William "Billy" Ford, M. D. Donald Sutherland - Major General Donald "Donnie" McClintock Kevin Spacey - Lieutenant Colonel Casey Schuler Cuba Gooding, Jr. - Major Salt Patrick Dempsey - James "Jimbo" Scott Zakes Mokae - Dr. Benjamin Iwabi Malick Bowens - Dr. Raswani Motaba, a fictional virus which causes a deadly fever, is discovered in the African jungle in 1967. The camp where the soldiers were infected is destroyed by U. S. Army Officer Billy Ford and Donald McClintock, to keep it a secret. Twenty-eight years later, in 1995, the virus resurfaces in Zaire. Daniels (a virologist), Schuler and Salt gather information and return to the United States. Brigadier General Ford dismisses Daniel's concern about the virus spreading. Daniel's ex-wife, Dr. Roberta Keough, has left USAMRID to take a position similar to Sam's at the CDC. Sam convinces her to ask her superior to put out an alert; but he is hesitant as well. I am interested in anything medical, especially a virus such as Ebola. The fictional Motaba virus mirrors that virus in the way that it spreads. I feel that we are a heartbeat away from a pandemic. This movie puts that fear into you. I'm not a big Dustin Hoffman fan; but he gets the job done; and everyone else is believable. Reviews were mixed; but I really liked this movie. I may be biased since I like the subject matter so much; but if you would like to find out what happens, I suggest that you give "Outbreak" a try. This movie is rated R. Photo Credit: Pixabay
Academy Award-winner Dustin Hoffman ("Tootsie," "Rainman") and Academy Award-nominee Morgan Freeman ("Driving Miss Daisy," "Unforgiven") star in this present...

With today's overpopulation crisis, and the ease of world travel, I fear it's only a matter of time before we have a global pandemic. We're way past due for one. I think it's Mother Nature's way of keeping everything in balance. Too many people on the planet? Wipe half of them out with a really bad epidemic.

Yep. I got sick in the pandemic in the 60s. I was young and healthy; so I survived being sick for TWO WEEKS. Today...I don't know. My husband would be at great risk.

I saw that and was frightened of what can actually happen. Dustin Hoffman may be a wonderful actor, but from what I heard, he’s not a very nice person.

I show this movie to my students every year in June. They LOVE it! If you like Outbreak you should read "The Hot Zone". It is excellent and I'm not just saying that as a science nerd.
