The Proposal was released in 2009 and is a romantic comedy. Bullock was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Although the movie was not highly praised, it did very well at the box office.
The two main characters are Margaret Tate, an Executive Editor in Chief for a New York book publishing firm, and Andrew Paxton, her Assistant that has served her patiently for 3 years. Margaret, ala "Devil Wears Prada" is extremely difficult to work for...a tyrannical workaholic.
CAST
Sandra Bullock - Margaret Tate
Ryan Reynolds - Andrew Paxton
Mary Steenburgen - Grace Paxton
Craig T. Nelson - Joe Paxton
Betty White - Grandma Annie (Gammy)
Malin Akerman - Gertrude
Oscar Nunez - Ramone
Denis O'Hare - Mr. Gilbertson
Tate faces deportation to Canada since her work visa has expired. She conspires to marry Paxton. In return she will make him Editor and publish a book that he has high praise for. The following Monday they are to meet with Mr. Gilbertson, the INS agent, and will tell him their stories separately and answer his questions. He believes that they are lying and is determined to deport Tate and charge Paxton with fraud.
Andrew is flying home the weekend prior to Sitka, Alaska to attend the 90th birthday celebration for his Grandma Annie (Gammy). Tate goes along and will play the role of the fiancee'. She will attempt to convince his family and Mr. Gilbertson that the engagement is legitimate.
During the welcome home party, Andrew's father makes it known that he is quite upset that Andrew is dating his boss that he dislikes so much and that he must be using her to get ahead. Andrew follows up the conversation with an announcement of his engagement to Tate.
You'll have to watch the movie to find out what happens next. There have been conflicting opinions about the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds. I'm on the side that feels there wasn't much chemistry. With Tate's haughty attitude there wasn't much time for Margaret and Andrew to make a real connection.
Bullock is good with physical comedy; and this movie has its share. From her introduction to the "Baby-maker" quilt, her naked confrontation with Reynolds (Don't worry, you can't see anything), the theft of the family dog to the silly dance in the woods, Bullock handles the silliness quite well...and silliness there is. Betty White is always good in whatever she tackles; and The Proposal is no different.
This movie would not win any awards; but it's good for an evening when there's nothing on the television. As a matter of fact, I've watched this movie more than once. It's simple, funny, predictable and a little sweet.
This movie is rated PG-13.

I really enjoyed this movie. I've seen it a number of times as well, not from the beginning. Was just channel surfing and happened to come upon it and decided to watch.
