Would you bite a horse?

A handful of times in my life, I've had a horse reach around and try to bite me when I was saddling or bridling them up. For the most part, they've never "gotten me," and I don't beleve they were trying to. They were just letting me know that something I did was vaguely uncomfortable. My response? I generally bite them back, on the neck, but not hard enough to be painful. Then I "groom" the area that I bit, to let them know that I didn't want to hurt them in any way. Do you enjoy interacting with animals? Are there things you've done that were "unusual" while you were establishing relationships with them?

I do enjoy playing with animals. My squirrels are relatively comfortable around me (one will skittishly take a peanut out of my hand on occasion).

Yeppers, the University of Chicago squirrels would do the same. I trained one to run up to my knee to score his peanut. I wore Levi's 501s in those days.

@JohnRoberts — well, if you insist. (Note Ray has a yeoman petty officer patch on his sailor uniform!)

I love horses and the races. When I was a teenager, I had wanted to be a jockey but it did not materialize because my parents were against it.

Why did your parents not want you to become a jockey?

@TheHorse it is a dangerous career. Falling off a horse is not rare for a jockey.

I have been called Dr. Doolittle and Ellie Mae. Does that tell you anything about what folks think about me and animals?

@TheHorse Astute question. I'm not entirely sure. At one point in my life I worked back office with ailing critters. All my life, I have walked into, say, a Vet clinic, a dog will be there. Dog sees me and perks up like he/she is itching to say hello. Never seen the dog in my life. As far as my own fur persons, I show them that they are safe when they are with me. When I take in somebody, maybe from a shelter or off the highway, I tell them they are safe and never going anywhere now that they are in the ark. Always talk to a fur person like you would a human. Don't assume they are stupid and don't understand. Its the human's job to learn their language.

@sallypup I agree with you! They may not understand all of our words, but they understand our tone of voice and gestures.

I often used to scratch them in the withers area as that's where they tend to groom each other when they stand head to tail.

@TheHorse I love animals, but I never place my face too close to an animal, particularly a horse. The younger brother of my grandfather used to kiss his horse, one day he lost big part of his upper lips. The horse surely did not intend to hurt, but he did.

Horses communicate a lot with their noses and mouths. When I first meet a horse I usually sniff their left nostril and then pull back slowly.

@LadyDuck I wonder what happened. I was bitten on my neck once by a horse that was sedated.

I have never bit one but have bit a couple of dogs. When a horse threatens to bite I do act like I am going to kill them for a few seconds. That mouth is just to big.

@wolfgirl569 Yeah, they can do some damage. Their front teeth are designed for grabbing and tearing (grass).

I love animals of all kinds big and small. If they're good to me I am good to them. I haven't met an animal I didn't like. I love horses and have interacted with them but rode only once. One time I had spent some time talking to a horse and then I had to leave. At first, I thought he was going to bite me but we had had a friendly conversation and what he did was grab a piece of my sleeve in his mouth and didn't want to let go. In other words, he wanted me to stay with him.

I LOVE interacting with animals. That's a great picture. I always kissed my dogs on the tops of their heads. I doubt that that is unusual.

When I used to raise mini dachshunds, our first male was called Fudge, as he was a chocolate doxie. We all loved him to pieces, that is the girls and I. My hubby who was always working did not spend much time around him. He was an indoor pet. After my daughters all started dating and eventually moved out, Fudge would come get on my bed and fall asleep Hubby would kick him out when he got home (shift work and law enforcement has odd hours). I think Fudge came to resent this, as one day when hubby came home in late afternoon and headed in for a nap Fudge had pee'd on his pillow. Now he was potty trained and had never done this before in the bed so he had to have been sending him a message. Hubby didn't think it was funny at all. If only we could know for sure what they were thinking!

@TheHorse My cat bites me and I have never bitten her back. I tell her that it hurts and how would she like to me to bite her but I could not do that. I would never bite any animal. I am not around horses so would not bite them. I understand that he or she was letting you know makes sense to me. When I meet a dog I put my hand out to see if he or she will let me pet her and if ok I go ahead and do it. I do not know if that is unusual or not. That is what I do.
