The / A dog is back

A week ago, maybe less, there was a dog that I spotted outside. It looked like it had a collar on. I went outside to investigate, and the dog was making it's way to the woods. I couldn't get it to come back down.
Today there's another dog out there. The dog looks similar to the one that I had seen, but I do not see a collar on this one. It may be the same, or it may be different.
I just witnessed a neighbor trying to get close to the dog, but while the dog was playful, it wasn't wanting to get close. The dog is now no longer in sight, but I had considered going out and trying my own hand at getting the dog to come around.
I think the next time I see a neighbor outside, I'll ask if they know whose dog it is.
Do you try to help stray dogs?

My ex boyfriend told me that he was surprised one of his dogs took so well to me. He told me even his friend can not approach the dog without it biting at him. I didn't tell my ex that it was probably because the dog had sensed something in his friend that it didn't like.
Most of the time animals take to me.

Here we have to take it to a vet to check for a microchip. I doubt i'd be able to do that as you know I don't drive. I am not sure that my family would agree to drive me to the vet to get the dog checked for a microchip.
The first dog I saw had a visible collar, and so I was hoping to see an ID tag.

@LadyDuck I know they tell us to be careful here. I would atleast try. If it seemed unfriendly or malnourished and mangy, I would not approach.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I call and they send someone, this is what they say to do, never touch a dog you do not know, he could bring some disease. All dogs here have a microchip, unless it's a stray, so they have to take care of him.

Well I dont get to see many strays around here.
I wonder if those dogs you have been seeing have their own commune in the woods.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Oh yes that is probably right. It was just fun for a minute for me to imagine a dog colony in the woods lol

The woods aren't as deep as they once were. Maybe a little over a decade ago a housing development sprang up. I can now walk through the woods just a few feet and be in the neighbor's (above me) back yard. There are some areas where the woods are better.
My guessing is that the dog came from that development.

@RebeccasFarm Well, that would be kind of cute, wouldn't it? Provided they were well nourished.

I'm a good judge of when a dog wants to be left alone. I witnessed the dog out with the neighbor, who was trying to get close to it. The dog seemed playful, but also with lots of high energy. The neighbor gave up, and the next time I looked the dog was not within view any longer.

I think it's the right thing to do. I also think about the family that might be missing the animal.

@whiteream Yes, they certainly do.
My ex boyfriend told me once that he was surprised one of his dogs took to me so well. He said that even his best friend couldnt' come in without the dog growling and snapping at it.
I didn't mention that perhaps the dog sensed something bad about his friend.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am sure they are. When I was in the trailer park, it happened all the time. Dogs seem to know who is friendly.

Was it one you knew, or did you have to find the tag info or chip?

Yes I always go out and try to get them and hold them here until I find their owners. Facebook makes finding the owners much faster.

@ScribbledAdNauseum our county has a lost pet group but I always just post a public post on my timeline and find the owners that way.

@shaggin Well that's awesome. I don't think my profile is public, so that wouldn't work for me.

Yes, I do like that you can go on facebook and say you've found a dog etc.
I wonder if my neighborhood has a facebook group? hmm, I've never checked...

Where we live we rarely if ever see stray dogs but I would certainly alert the authorities if I saw one!
