He thought he was charming

There is a discussion that @Bensen32 started about a customer he witnessed while getting some lunch meat at the deli counter.
It made me think of another customer that I've had experience with, I'll tell you about him below.
No one really liked the man. He had this air about him. He obviously thought highly of himself, but he tried to have this charm about him too. At the time, I was a cashier and he, his wife and their cute baby would come in during the night. There were a few things I didn't like about the man.
1) It was obvious to me that he was abusive towards his wife. I couldn't see any bruises, but I just felt it in the way she acted around him. You could tell that she was being fake, as soon as he turned his head her shoulders would droop and her frown would reappear. I also believe she flinched a few times when around him.
2) He was always forgetting something or going back to shop for more. They always had such big cart fulls of groceries as well, so going back for more, it just annoyed me.
3) He kept trying to win me over, but I wouldn't budge. I knew the type of man he was, and I didn't like it. I was only as courteous as I had to be.
*This was several years ago now and so I don't remember somethings about the guy as well as I once did.
Have you ever come across a rude customer, either as a customer yourself or as an employee of a company?

I really wish that employees were able to call people out on being rude without the risk of losing their jobs. No one should verbally abuse another person just because they work in a grocery store, gas station, or restaurant.

@LindaOHio I can imagine their frustrations, but I don't think cursing is called for.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I worked in customer service for a salt company for 10 years. You should hear the mouths on these road maintenance people when it snows and they can't get salt quick enough to their liking.

Oh yea, come across them all the time in both situations. To many people think cause they are the customer they are always right and that is so not true. Sometimes a customer can make or break your business but this is rare. Sometimes your drama is not worth your business.

It amuses me that the internet now calls these rude customers "Karens". Ya know, the ones that want to see a manager etc.
I just think that the grocery chains etc should allow their employees to call out a rude customer when they are being rude. No one should be abused like that.

@Bensen32 Oh, I know it's like that. Employers would rather let their employees be verbally abused than to do something about it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yea, but I think one they don't want to lose customers and it might have something to do with not trying to set off a customer. Just let them leave without starting more of an issue.

@rakski I think that life moves so fast, people have to have things now... It makes people grumpy and so we hear about more and more mean, not so nice, grumpy customers.

Your question reminded me of a delivery man who delivered packages to our work place years ago. He was always rude and never friendly. I found out later that his wife was dying of cancer at the time, so I've tried to give people the benefit of the doubt when I can. But that customer you had sounds like a jerk.

I think it's important to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I know it's not always easy to do so. I am sorry to hear that his wife was dying of cancer, and I can't blame him for being so rude.

@thelme55 I know that a lot of people are unintentionally rude when they feel harried, but I've seen and heard of alot of people that are intentionally rude because they feel they are entitled to it. How sad!

Was he kinda being flirty to you right in front of his wife? Oh yes, I've seen many rude customers throughout the years. And when I was on the customer service side, all I could really do is bite my lip and laugh it off if I could . . . in a job situation, it's hard to tell a customer to simply buzz off

@much2say It really shows how mature they are and how much they seem to think of themselves over others. It takes someone with gusto to knock these type down a few pegs.

No, he wasn't being flirty.. He was just trying to seem overly nice.. Yes, I really wish that employees had more power to tell someone to buzz off, but unfortunately, they just have to take the abuse. Some of these mean people know it too,and will be extra annoying and rude because of it.

I have done that a time or two, or if nothing else, I try to be very pleasant to the employee to sort of make up for the rude behavior.
I hate that the employees can't call people out on their rudea$$ behavior.
